Chicago reaches 500 homicides with fatal shooting

Chicago has logged its 500th homicide of 2012.

The last time the city reached the 500-homicide mark was in 2008, when the year ended with 512 killings. Last year, city records show Chicago had 435 homicides.

On Thursday, officials with the Chicago Police Department said the city was one homicide away from the 500 mark. Hours later, a 40-year-old man was fatally shot in the Austin neighborhood on the city's West Side. Police say Nathaniel Jackson was found on the sidewalk outside a convenience store with a gunshot wound to the head late Thursday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office says Jackson was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital early Friday.

Jackson's death remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

I really do not see the NEWS in this news story.
Now if Chicago had less than 100 homicides in a year, THAT would be news. Or less than 200 or less than 300

Chicago needs to make it illegal for gang members to own guns.

Some perspective might make this a more relevant story. NYC has had 385 homicides to date with more than 3 times the population.

Los Angeles topped that in 1992, with 1,092 homicides.

It would be interesting to know how many of the dead were gangbangers and how many were innocent citizens,

“Chicago needs to make it illegal for gang members to own guns.”

They just need to post pictures of guns with the red circle and a slash.

Larry Pickens, who is running for JJJr’s Congressional seat, has some completely original ideas:

“Teaching our young people alternative dispute resolution, non-violent strategies for addressing conflict and getting guns off the street.”

Why not?

That always worked in Detroit and D.C.
