At this point the only requirements for a woman or preferred minority to be a cop seems to be the absence of a felony conviction. NJ.com had a photo of Newarks cops being laid off; they were having some kind of military-style ceremony (with boots lined up in front of them). Many of them were in no condition to be cops (and these were the young ones - last in, first out); with the exception of a couple that looked like they were former military, these slobs were in no shape to be cops (in Newark, or anywhere else).
A town near mine hired one of these young laid-off cops (I think he was white - his father was a captain or something in the Newark PD); he was arrested a few months later for stealing from a resident’s home.
They tried to soften the blow of the layoffs by trying to place these people with other departments that might be hiring; this basically took any young applicants (including a former Marine I know) and dashed any chances they had of getting police work.
I remember Miami had a real problem when they were forced to hire minorities for the police force.
Bunch were later put in jail for shaking down drug dealers, murder and the like.
Gots to push that cultural diversity now ya know.

Ridiculous; I’ve only been to Miami once, and I was struck by a sign on a restaurant that advertised that they spoke English. I live around a lot of Hispanics here in northern NJ, and we have nothing like that...
Couple of very big cases a few years back when they had to weed out some of the cops that had been hired in the Miami area after standards were lessened to get minorities that could get on the force.
In other words it use to be that had you been convicted of poscession or a crime you couldn’t get in. They didn’t get enough minorities to fill their “quota” so they nixed the prior requirement. And ultimately it led to problems.

Also, one of my nephews took a train through Newark with a short stopover during his Holiday travel. From what he said, it’s as charming as you’ve documented.
