Hollywood star Matt Damon takes on energy industry with fracking film Promised Land
The Telegraph ^ | 29 Dec 2012 | Jacqui Goddard

Matt Damon's film is set to intensify debate on fracking

As one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors with a reputation for straight-talking, he has made little secret of his willingness to confront thorny political and social issues.

Now Matt Damon is facing off against one of America's most powerful institutions - the oil and gas industry - in a film that represents a new battleground for environmentalists' campaigns against fracking.

Promised Land, which goes on nationwide release in the US this week, is set to intensify debate on the controversial drilling technique to such an extent that the industry has prepared a public relations campaign of its own to mitigate the film's impact.

The movie, directed by Gus Van Sant, tells the story of a smooth-talking oil company 'land-man' dispatched to a rural and economically depressed Pennsylvania community to persuade residents to sign over their mineral rights, armed with a company chequebook. What seemed an easy task becomes complicated by locals' objections and, ultimately, the landman's own crisis of conscience.

Fracking - or hydraulic fracturing - relies on forcing millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals deep underground at high pressure, breaking layers of shale rock to release oil and gas.

This will get Damon a night or two in the Lincoln bedroom. He’s just a left-wing nut who has tanked for Bronco Bama and his cronies.

This is one actor I will not pay to see no matter what.
Another clueless Hollywood actor out of touch with any kind of reality.
His last few films haven't done that well including his conspiracy film “Greenzone”, which died a quick death at the box office.
He's just a little too effeminate for me and I never could see him in the role of Jason Bourne, this guy is just not an action star.

Dammon is a useful idiot. He has no clue about fracking other than what his fellow useful idiots tell him to say.

The list of Hollywood people I can stomach watching anymore gets smaller and smaller each day.

Mr. Damon is apparently trying to use his scientific knowledge of energy production in a manner similar to the way noted Nuclear Scientist Ms. Fonda used hers to destroy an industry.

Saw the trailer. Even it made it look like this movie is going to suck. Another Hollywood celebrity propaganda piece like China Syndrome or Norma Rae. I’ll stick with “Last Ounce Of Courage”. The hippies can keep Damon’s crock.

Utterly despicable on multiple levels, especially for the use of conservative iconography (family farms, intact red-state families who drive pickups etc etc etc) in the service of a Stalinist collectivist agenda.

Remember when films were entertainment, and not Obama socialism commercials.

Well some stars have always been liberal message carriers, stars like Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey, they made some God-awful liberal trash, but mostly Hollywood was entertaining.

I haven’t been in a movie theater in years, last good movie I saw was Sea Biscuit.

And Damon’s Petroleum Engineering degree is from which university . . . . . . . . . . . . !??

Either Damon wants to join Leonardo DiDumdio, algore or Michael Moore in the Disingenuous Propaganda Passing As Fact documentary category, or he is just announcing to the world, “I’m a kool-aide-chugging moron and here’s my proof!”

I'm hoping the energy industry will take a few notes and implement the Ringling Brothers strategy for dealing with nuisance litigation.

People who use the courts to enforce their ideology that they can't achieve through the political process need to be sued into oblivion. Methinks the energy industry in the US has the resources to do it.

I predict that this movie will just...go away.

Picture, if you will, Saturday evening in the Six-Pack household. Joe and Jane want to go see a movie.

What will they choose? A chick-flick? A zombie movie? A film with gangstas and car chases? No, they’ll certainly pick a movie about FRACKING!

Folks, this is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser! I can just see Honey Boo-Boo’s entire family waiting in line for such top-notch entertainment!

Matt Damon's house in Miami Beach, Florida.

Took a hell of lot of petroleum-based energy to build this mansion...yet Matt thinks we paupers ought to pay more for our energy. After all, we're not millionaire Hollywood punks.

“John’s $2+ million home with his actress wife Emily Blunt has SOLAR PANELS. Oooh.”

Yes it’s real nice of the ratepayers of California to subsidize their solar panels. Rich and poor alike kick in so Hollywood elitist can get big breaks on their solar panels. So cool. Goes over big at the cocktail parties.
