Ravi Dass Camp, a poor neighborhood in South Delhi, is a maze of narrow lanes, open drains, and pastel-colored mud-and-brick houses. Clothes are hung to dry on power lines above the corrugated metal rooftops.
Its a typical city slum where locals say they try to make an honest living doing everything from construction day-labor to driving auto-rickshaws to cleaning houses.
But these days, Ravi Dass Camp has an unwelcome distinction: it is home to four of the six men accused of carrying out the Dec. 16 gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman aboard a chartered bus that inflicted such horrific damage on her body that she died early Saturday.
Relatives and neighbors of the alleged perpetrators say they are sad, angry and ashamed about what has happened. The reputation of our neighborhood has been tarnished, said Asha, who goes by only one name.
Ms. Asha is related to two of the accused: bus driver Ram Singh and his brother Mukesh Singh. Her husband, Raju, is their step-brother and they have lived next door to the Singh brothers and their parents for years.
She says Ram and Mukesh moved to Delhi with their family from their native village in Rajasthan state in the early 1990s. ...

There was a film starring Patrick Swayzee from about 15 yrs ago called City of Joy, set in an Indian slum like the one in this article.
Give them a fair trial and if they’re convicted, hang them publicly.
Very strange story. Some fairly obvious questions aren’t being addressed, or at least it seems so to me.
Were these guys a group of friends out together, or were some of them random guys on a bus? For some reason the second scenario seems even more disturbing.
Was the bus stolen? Was it on a standard scheduled run. Was the driver doing his job or had he run off with the bus? What do they mean by joyriding?
Hang them upside down and naked
You are an observant reader - yes, those are pertinent issues. The bus driver has been charged as a accomplice, and news reports say the couple were “lured” onto the near empty bus. I think the driver and this gang absconded with the bus, and went looking for some vulnerable people to pick up.
I hope the full story comes out in court.
There is no caste involved in this case.
Eve teasing is a big problem in Delhi. What happened with this girl is horrid and I still can’t read whole news. Very disturbing. Not sure, why this couple decided to travel by this bus?
ethnic cleansing jihad?
Quite possible. Another aspect I haven’t seen reported is the ethnicity, caste or religious community of the perps versus the victims.
It is entirely possible they were just random targets, but I would assume ethnic or religious antagonism is a possible motive.
As I live in India, this has (obviously) been a large portion of each day’s news. So:
Caste was not an issue. All involved were Hindu, and none (so far as I have heard) were low caste. The girl and her boyfriend were middle-class kids out for a movie at a large, modern shopping mall.
The bus was a private coach used for local service, and was legitimately assigned to the driver, though he had finished his runs. He and his buddies were out driving around.
They happened to see the couple standing at an empty taxi stand near the shopping center, and offered to drive them to the district the couple lived in. Once they had them on board, they attacked the couple as the bus continued driving. After about 45 minutes, they threw the two kids out onto the road and drove off. The only reason the bus was identified was because it happened to pass through a toll plaza during the drive, and was caught on camera, though nothing could be seen of what was happening inside.
Speculation is that the men on the bus just randomly decided to attack the girl, and got carried away. They may not have even intended to do anything when they first picked the couple up, but possibly, once on board, they started teasing her, and when the boyfriend intervened and they beat him, they just got lost in the moment. We won’t know until the trial what went through their minds, so that is just speculation.
They got on this bus because they had been unable to get a taxi to take them to the district where they lived (no driver wanted to take them that far). The bus pulled up at the empty taxi stand where the couple were standing, and the couple asked if the bus could take them, and the people on the bus agreed.
I don't think honorable men would get 'carried away' like this... Obviously these men are typical criminal lowlifes. They should be put tried for rape and murder - and hopefully put to death...
They should have taken Auto. Auto is still safer than Taxi or Bus in Delhi during night.
I don’t understand carried away part, these lowlifes should be shot dead. I have some doubts whether police had caught right guys.
so you are telling us that they are nothing more than wild animals......then I say kill the mad dogs now
They actually tried. They were able to get an auto from the shopping center, but the driver changed his mind and decided not to take them all the way to their destination. The driver dropped them at the empty taxi stand where they later were picked up by the bus.
