Sen. Reid To GOP: "At This Stage We're Not Able To Make A Counteroffer"
Real Clear Politics ^ | December 30, 2012

Posted on 12/30/2012 12:08:20 PM PST by Hojczyk

SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL (R-KENTUCKY): My office submitted our latest offer to the Majority Leader last night at 7:10 p.m. and offered to work through the night to find common ground. The Majority Leader's staff informed us they would be getting back to us this morning at 10:00 a.m., despite the obvious time crunch we all have. It's now 2:00 p.m., and we have yet to receive a response to our good-faith offer.

Now, I'm concerned about the lack of urgency here. I think we all know we're running out of time. This is far too much at stake for political gamesmanship. We need to protect the American families and businesses from this looming tax hike. Everyone agrees that that action is necessary. In order to get things moving, I have just spoken with the Majority Leader. I also placed a call to the vice president to see if he could help jump-start the negotiations on his side.

The vice president and I have worked together on solutions before, and I believe we can again. I want my colleagues to know that we'll keep everyone updated. The consequences of this are too high for the American people to be engaged in a political messaging campaign. I'm interested in getting a result here.

I was here all day yesterday. As I indicated, we submitted our latest proposal at 7:00 p.m. last night. We're willing to work with whoever, whoever can help. There is no single issue that remains an impossible sticking point. The sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest, or frankly the courage to close the deal. I want everyone to know i'm willing to get this done, but I need a dance partner.

This position, attributed to Senator Reid, appears at the bottom of the article:
I have had a number of conversations with the president, and at this stage we're not able to make a counteroffer. The Republican leader has told me that -- and he's just said here -- that he's working with the vice president, and he and the vice president, I wish them well.

In the meantime, I will continue to try to come up with something. But at this stage, I don't have a counteroffer to make. Perhaps as the day wears on, I will be able to. I will say this, I think that the Republican leader has shown absolutely good faith. It's just that we are apart on some pretty big issues. (Emphasis added.)

I don't quite know what to make of it. If, following Senator Reid's conversations with President Obama, he has not been able to make a counter offer, and if the Republican leader has shown "absolutely good faith," might it properly be inferred that President Obama has not? That's my initial interpretation.

The GOP is negotiating with themselves and will give up the whole store and throw the kitchen sink in for free.

IMO it's already too late. Any deal would be voted on unread and undebated, passed in the dark of night. Another "find out what's in it" deal.

I'd rather let it burn.

No wonder the communist piece of crap Obama was watching the movie “Lincoln”.

did you all see this , the marxist Obama dictator is making it the mission of its term to take away our ability to own guns, our right to defend ourselves and to freedom and ownership, our individual rights.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2973395/posts?page=1

President Obama on Sunday said he would make gun control a priority in his new term, pledging to put his “full weight” behind passing new restrictions on firearms in 2013.

“Reid and the Democrats are all but openly rooting for a government shutdown, knowing that the Obama-fluffer Media will spin it in their favor.”

And if the Republicans are once again defeated in another “compromise”, who do you think the media will call the victor?

My point being is that it’s better for the Republicans to keep the Tea Party with them and hold their ground, REGARDLESS of the outcome - than to let Obama break off the Tea Party and pretty much end the Republicans as an opposition party - which is their real goal.

We get beat up either way - we might as well hold together while we get beat up and have the Tea Party come out in 2014, so as to prevent Pelosi 2.0

...in any case, once the wealthy Northeastern Liberals get on the phone with their DEMOCRAT Congressmen, the Dems in Congress WILL BUCKLE. There is only so much punishment that a human can take before going insane, when a Northeast Liberal is at the other end of the phone. The Northeast Liberals will be DEMANDING that the Dems agree to ANYTHING that keeps their taxes from going up - and they are a HUGE faction of the Democrat Party, and Obama and the Dems know that full well - and will have to buckle because of them.

In other words, the Dems are BLUFFING now - but are the Republicans able to figure that out? History says no - they’re too stupid.

So, Mitch McConnell was foolish enough to believe that if Harry Reid said he would have a response ready by 10:00 a.m. today, Harry would actually have such a response ready as promised.

Apparently, Senator McConnell set the time limit at 10:00 because if it were set any later, it would be impossible for the members of Congress and Senators to be able to read and act on whatever the final Reid/McConnell negotiations might produce within the few short hours remaining before New Year’s Day.

It’s over. If John Boehner should have the preposterous intention of announcing a complete cave-in at his scheduled speech at 6:30 today, he’ll be booed off the podium by the majority of Republicans who voted against John Boehner’s previous cave-in proposal, Plan B, last week. Happy New Year.

Ah...it’s Lindsay. Mouthpiece of all compromise. The (theoretically) ‘man’ they send out to break the news every time they give in.

When the announcement is made and the vote taken, I would be SHOCKED if it deviated from “Obama won’.

You really think the GOP is going to win? Really? You think they will not give Obama what he wants? Really? You are a longtime Freeper. You cannot think that. It’s unpossible hugh and series.

I will believe the GOP is going to win, until the day I switch to a new party.

No new party has presented itself yet. So I offer my opinion to the current alternative.

If they pull this off now, and the gun control as well, they will have won a reprieve from this poster anyway.

Temporary? We shall see.

Just as we shall see how the GOP plays this.

It is quite important, and opinions are changing as we speak.

A (lot) of people are buying guns right now, which clearly shows the public very focused on that issue.

Do not be deceived by the media spin.

And do not “go along” just to go along.

This is important. The left has set the public agenda so far.

Do not give them anything.

When did the Senate ever make an offer at all?

The only "offer" I heard was basically just reiterating The Won [again]'s original plan. Expire Bush's cuts on over $250K, extend below $250K, extend federal unemployment bene's. Some "offer".

No, Reid's a snake. The relative omission of Obama means nothing, and a Liar, er, Democrat saying Boner's shown "good faith" means he's doing his level best to cave and screw us one more time.

The game, my friends, is to go over the cliff and then make a deal.

The idea is to hide the Obamacare tax increases with whatever “deal” is worked out.

The Won [Again] is always comparing himself to Lincoln, and it gets conservatives' panties all in a bunch. I think "Ignore the Constitution, wage war on fellow Americans, and conduct a power grab meant to steal power from the states and the people and consolidate it in the hands of the feds? You forgot to mention burning and genocide of millions of Americans as in “the burning of Atlanta”

In July of 1864, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman’s troops approached Atlanta which would set the stage for a total war against the people of Georgia, commonly called his “March To The Sea.” From Atlanta to Savannah, Sherman left a trail of utter destruction behind. He and his bummers stripped the land clean of all resources. What they could not use themselves, they destroyed so that nothing was left for the civilian population in the way of sustaining life.
