We didnt use any of the violent photos he sent to NBC, Steele recalls. In our opinion, we felt like the package was a cry for attention, and that was the last thing we wanted to give him.\
Loren Coleman, author of The Copycat Effect and a behavioral expert who has consulted on school violence for Maine state schools, argues that the recommendations prevention experts give regarding press-driven suicide contagion should apply to these types of murder-suicides as well. Back in the suicide days, if you put the method in the newspaper, the next series of suicide clusters exactly repeated the method, he says. Now with mass shootings, too, he says, were even having the copycat down to the type of gun.
The American Psychiatric Association agreed with Steele and Coleman in 2007 when, after the shootings at Virginia Tech, it distributed a letter calling on news organizations to stop disseminating the murderers self-made promo materials. Such publicity not only seems insensitive to the grieving and traumatized families, friends and peers of those murdered and injured, but also seriously jeopardizes the publics safety by potentially inciting copycat suicides, homicides and other incidents, read the statement. The APA cited a World Health Organization Report, saying the scientific evidence in this area is clear. The APA also suggested that the assailant may have taken inspiration from the Columbine tragedy.

BUMP
people (especially children) like to mimic what they see on TV and in the movies
Why do you think leftists have added gays and slutty women as main characters on so many shows?
ADVERTISING for what is “normal”
You know what they say. If it bleeds it reads.
“Do media vultures perpetuate mass killings?”
IMHO, yes they do.
There have been mass killings since forever. But there hasn’t been the media saturation that there is today.
Do bears do bear things in the woods?
I think the media deliberately provokes killers so that they can then film our dear leaders crying as they demand more controls over us.
Some suicides illogically focus on what the world will be like after they are gone. To see the amount of attention they’ll get once they commit their atrocity can justify their actions (to them). Imagine you are going to suicide because nobody understands you, then see every hoplophobic journalist spending hours trying to understand the last spree killer. It just might give them some ideas!
Of the last batch, each is worse, but each is much more planned out, and more copycat.
I’ll go as far as to say that the MSM is (again) working with government to disarm us and having more killings to publicize helps that agenda.
I guess they don’t mimic Fox news much, and that’s the biggest news show!!
YUP!
Well, there really hasn’t been media saturation forever either, has there? Mostly just in the last 10-20yrs.
How does the media know who to provoke?
They provoke everyone, and let those that wish to mimic self select.
I don’t feel provoked, do you? How does this provocation manifest itself?
“How does the media know who to provoke?”
They don’t have to pick. They just need to advertise.
Disturbed? Lonely? Nobody cares? Misunderstood? Angry? LOOK AT THIS, we’ll show what happens when YOU do something EVEN WORSE than what we are showing you now! Want 24/7 attention? Want the President to speak your name? Want every newsroom in America speaking your name several times per day, as we try to analyze and understand everything about you? Hey, WE can make you more famous than whatizname that shot John Lennon! Here is a list of weapons you’ll need and don’t forget we’ve been saying for two decades now that an AR or AK is “powerful”, so powerful the POLICE will fear you!
That sort of blanket advertising.
Mass shootings are a valuable tool for the crisis exploiters.
Economically, they’re just satisfying a demand.
Look at how desperate people are in the Breaking Threads here for the name of the perp, and any information about them (particularly when the information serves whatever political/religious/drug axes they wish to grind).
“Economically, theyre just satisfying a demand.”
Good point. If so the unintended consequences are working out for our Dear Leaders.
People here want to know the name so they can crow when it’s Ahmed or Mohammed, and groan when it’s Bob Smith.
Well, the hope it’s a Muslim drives a lot of it on FR specifically, but that’s not all of it; if that’s a touchdown, the perp being gay or an illegal Mexican immigrant is at least a field goal.
And plenty of people want to know if the perp is a marijuana user, etc.
Though the above is hardly unique to FR, of course; I’m sure DU was thrilled to discover the mother was a gun enthusiast.
The info about the perp is only half of it; the other half are “grief junkies” (which seem to me to be almost entirely women) that are into sitting around glued to the TV and watching hours of tearful interviews and children crying and memorial services, etc. Somehow the shared grief makes their own boring and irrelevant lives seem more important.
I was working out in our gym and “Entertainment Tonight” was on the TV with no sound, but no way to change the channel; they devoted something like 20 minutes of the show to Newtown, nothing but slow pans of running children, etc. Also had about 10 minutes of showing celebrities commenting on it-I mean, who gives a crap about how sorry Kristen Stewart is about the tragedy?
Nailed it.
If pictures, description, and repetition aren’t effective why do they charge so much for advertizing?
