All that was not won on this round can be had in negotiating the increase of the debt ceiling. BHO has no leverage on that one, but Boehner and McConnell will likely blow that too.
You can surrender without being in a fight. The Pubbies never put up a fight.
Studying history: During the War of 1812, American General William Hull surrenders Fort Detroit and his army to the British without a fight; In May 1782 the British commander at Nassau, John Maxwell decided to surrender the island without a fight when confronted by the superior force.
The Pubbies never had their heart into protecting the American Public ... as you said they only want to salvage their jobs, their positions.
They can’t even put up a fake front convincingly. Their heart isn’t in it. Many have no convictions to stand by ... just the spur of the party line they’ve bought into.
I think I am going to put return to sender on all of my Republican mail. This whole thing has turned into a joke at the expense of God loving, God fearing, hard working, taxpayers. If God only requires 10 percent (and it is all his anyway including our next breath). . .why should we give the government more than that. Maybe they are being threatened with blackmail. . .who knows.
I don’t know what anybody expected. After Boehner couldn’t get the republicans to vote for ANY of their own bills, and he couldn’t even get a majority to amend the Senate bill with spending cuts, what other choice does he have?
It is clear there are enough republicans who will support this plan, and since the conservatives have proven they will provide no support for anything that can pass, this is essentially what the conservatives have worked to achieve.
Certainly we are all smart enough to know this. If you wanted to push for purity, this was exactly what we were pushing for. A horrible bill, but it doesn’t have conservative support.
It remains to be seen if this is better than participating in the process.

Each and every one of those Republican Senators who voted for this monstrosity need to be voted out of office! Ditto to any GOP Representative in the House who votes for it.
At the VERY LEAST, if that Surrender Monkey gets this bill passed with all the Democrat votes and a minority of his own party, HE SHOULD BE VOTED OUT OF THE SPEAKER’S POSITION!!

I have said it before and say it again, the GOP must be destroyed at this point. Only conservatives in that party deserve our votes and our money.
Why didn’t Boehner make “Plan B” just a little more acceptable to conservatives?
Do you think it wise to cut them out of participation?
(For goodness sake he could have got it passed if it had a cut on Big Bird in it- even Romney wasn’t afraid to come out for that!)
Why should the Party fight so hard to protect the few RINOs?
The stone simple fact is that NOTHING is going to pass that includes any cuts in social security, medicaid, medicare or Obamacare.
Not now, not in 25 years.
At 51 I know of not a single person who will settle for one inflation adjusted cent less than the people 10, 20 pr 30 years older are receiving or have received. Anyone belonging to any party other than the Democratic had best come to terms with that fact or go through being the Bad Guys every single year when we go through this crap.
I’m not making a value judgement, I’m merely stating a fact. There will be nothing resembling an ‘entitlement’ cut, not now, not in the future, because the Democrats and the moderate Republicans will face sheer hell from their constituents, tea party or no tea party.
This is the new reality. No one my age, that is near but under retirement age is going to support anything that even vaguely resembles a reduction. At least not enough of them to make the slightest difference in the electoral makeup of the federal government.
I’m sure there are a few people who will just say some blather like “Just give me what I paid into it and let me go on my way”. Not going to happen. This is the political reality.
Very few in my generation have been able to, or really even tried, to provide for a retirement that doesn’t take into account Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and related programs. Whatever else the government is “supposed” to do it has no choice about doing this.
Just a cranky, Gen X’er who has pretty much gotten used to the Republicans looking like extras in a three stooges movie when the pies start flying.

Seriously. If you believed that the stand to not increase any taxes was going to lead to a permanent extension of the Bush tax rates, you are an idiot.
I don’t think you are idiot. The argument was that conservatives would not vote for anything BUT a full extension of all the tax rates, and therefore would force the democrats to pass the tax increase, and therefore they would own the tax increases.
That is what happened — in the house anyway, where a majority of the republicans voted against the bill.
There were only two outcomes possible:
- The conservatives compromise on some set of tax rates higher than the expired Bush rates
- The conservatives refuse to compromise, and a set of tax rates supported by democrats will pass.
The 3rd option, continuation of the existing Bush tax law, meaning all the tax rates reverting to their year-2000 level (adjusted for inflation), was never going to happen, because it was clear the democrats had enough support from republicans to keep taxes from going up for most taxpayers.
So if you thought that by holding out, we’d get taxes increased for everybody, you would also be an idiot.
When you control only 1/2 of the legislature, and don’t have the presidency, and current law includes a huge tax increase (meaning you can’t stop it by simply not passing something), and a majority of the people oppose your plan, it is impossible to get everything that you want.
So you either compromise, or let the other side do what they want. We essentially chose the latter, although frankly given that we ceded control, we did better than I would have expected.
I think we could have gotten the highest tax bracket set higher, and I think we could have included real spending cuts, if conservatives would have voted for the bill with the tax increase. But they wouldn’t, and so we had no bargaining leverage, and we were stuck with what we were stuck with.
Now we’ll see if that strategy worked. The democrats own the new tax rates. I don’t see how we make them pay for that, but we’ll see.
