Norquist: GOP Must Insist on 'Dollar-for-Dollar' Spending Cuts

Grover Norquist declared in an exclusive Newsmax TV interview that President Barack Obama will not get to increase the nation’s debt ceiling unless Republicans “get a dollar-for-dollar reduction in real spending.”

“That’s the leverage,” Norquist, the influential founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform, tells Newsmax. “The president needs something. He’s running up debt. He needs a debt-ceiling increase.”

As discussions to raise the nation’s $16.4 trillion debt ceiling near, House Speaker John Boehner has said he would not negotiate with President Obama.

Still, “The Boehner Rule” — which ties a rise in the debt threshold to an equal amount in spending reductions — will underscore the tenor of the discussions, Norquist said.

“Two years ago, he said the same thing in a debt-ceiling fight, and we got $2.5 trillion in spending cuts out of him,” he said, referring to the 2011 deal in which Obama agreed to spending reductions over 10 years. “If he wants to raise the debt ceiling, he’s got to cut spending. ‘The Boehner Rule’ has made it very clear that that’s the only way it’s going to happen — and he didn’t like it two years ago, and he whined and moaned and complained, and eventually, he had to deal with that fact.”

Reflecting on the deal to avert the fiscal cliff that Congress approved this week, Norquist characterized it as “progress.”

“Unfortunately, what happened was that Congress scheduled a $500 billion tax increase if nothing happened. The Bush tax cuts and the alternative minimum tax lapsed — so if nobody acted, then there’s going to be a $5 trillion tax increase over the next decade.

“Instead, Congress voted to take about 85 percent of those tax dollars away from the government, leave them with voters.

This useful idiot provided cover for a bunch of Republicans to pass a law which raises taxes on the majority of Americans.

Go away Grover, you have prostituted yourself.

The only reason that it was an “exclusive” interview is that Newsmax is the only outlet that wanted to give him face time.

I don’t care about the smoke screen spending cuts, fiscal cliff, or any of that other bull. I want to know who killed the kids at Sandy Hook.

If the men, especially the parents of this country, are not enraged about 20 dead 6 year olds, then this country is not worth my life.

There will be no real spending cuts. The dems will never allow it. If they do allow it then people will see that the world is OK and that more cuts can be made. This is death for big govt types.

There won’t be any spending cuts unless we shut down the government and wait out the commies.

Obama agreed to spending reductions over 10 years

Anything past year 2 is worthless and I wouldn't even trust the FY2014 figures. There must be immediate cuts in this year's spending, not in 2023.

Dollar for Dollar? Hahahahahahahaha!

Dictators don’t negotiate. You R’s are now perpetually on your heals. We have one party rule and the tyrants has no reason whatsoever to stop what they’re doing.

One of my senators, Jim Inhofe, just said this tax increase was a tax cut because it thwarted a bigger tax increase. When that’s the rationalization they can pass anything. “This bill is pro-second amendment because the bill Feinstein proposed would have lead to confiscation.” “This budget (yeah right, like they’re ever going to pass a budget) cuts spending because the budget Stint Sporkman proposed had more spending.” “This isn’t pork because...”

No, we crossed the Rubicon in November -- and neither party wants to stop spending. Just do the best you can to protect yourself and your loved ones, and wait.

I’m sik of Grover Norquist. Spending cuts over 10 years = zero spending cuts and we all know it. The cuts have to be immediate or they will never happen. You cannot bind future Congesses. Its all Kabuki theatre.
