After President Obama wrapped her in a well-publicized embrace, Donna Vanzant became the face of a promise of immediate assistance from the federal government in the days after superstorm Sandy devastated the East Coast.
But as Vanzant battled with her insurance company for the funds to rebuild her Jersey Shore marina, she had another brush with the commander-in-chief that left her feeling less confident in Washington's efforts. After sending an email to the White House asking for the federal government to make good on its promise to help, Vanzant received a form letter that never answered her questions.
It had nothing to do with what I was asking him. It was a form letter. It thanked me for supporting the troops, Vanzant said in an interview The Philly Post blog on Friday. He made a promise to rebuild on national television, and I cant even get this money. Its heartbreaking, really.
Now, Vanzant has her own tenacity to thank for the light at the end of the tunnel. After her insurance company refused to return multiple calls, she finally got through in the wake of the new media attention -- and got some answers.
The company is mailing me a check next week. Its nowhere what I need, but it will help," Vanzant, whose North Shore Marina in Brigantine, N.J., was severely destroyed during the October storm, told FoxNews.com.
Vanzant says she will be receiving a check for $160,000, which will provide a start for rebuilding her business, though it will not completely cover losses she estimates at $500,000.
Im just a person working seven days a week, trying to get by," she said. "Were going to work through it."

Barry is a photo op Marxist. What did they expect from him? He “won” the big “election” and says he won’t be running for anything anymore. What’s he got to worry about? It’s the Life of Riley for Barry from here on out. They can badmouth him all they want. He don’t care.
I wonder if she and how many others in Hurricane Sandy’s destructive path voted for the marxist/muslim/racist/hate-America/liar/traitor POS in the White Hut/Crib, so he’d get re-elected and they’d get “taken care of promptly”? He doesn’t give a rat’s ass about any of them. Why should he?
...well ... Honey... you just been Christieieze by the Zero-in-charge.... Welcome to the new reality...
Ain't no a--hole like an east coast a--hole.
Yeah. I heard Rita Cosby, supposedly one of us, whining incessantly about the lack of my children's money to for these people. I am disgusted beyond all belief at the avarice displayed by the people of NY, NJ and CT.
When did it become my responsibility to rebuild homes damaged by a storm?
Why don't they?
I guess those on the Jersey Short got “snookied” by Obummer.
When did the federal government gain the power to usurp the insurance companies?
Why carry home or business insurance when you can get the federal government to extort money from other people and give it to you to pay for your loss?
It was wrong when Bill Clinton did it, wrong when George Bush did it, and it’s wrong when Obama does it.
Alot of these people have flood insurance claims through the Federal program. Their sttlements are being held up by congress (that is one of the two Sandy relief bills held up for votes).
These people bought flood insurance in good faith via a Federal program and have not been paid on their claims. You;d be complaining too if you paid for something for years and when you needed it, it wasn’t there.
The two hardest hit counties in New Jersey (Ocean & Monmouth) both were won by Romney in large margins.
Not just destroyed, but severely destroyed.
0bummer will ignore them 1st & 2nd, on his “shit-list”.
why not private insurance or help yourself like don't live on the beach?
we don't need any government.
they stole hundreds of billions here for Katrina. government doesn't work, idiots just won the lottery here.
“why not private insurance or help yourself like don’t live on the beach?”
I guess you don’t know anything about insurance...
Flood insurance is available through the NFIP a Federal program. Private insurance companies sell the policies but claims are paid by the Federal government.
Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood damage.
As for living on the beach, these areas are fairly safe. there is no recorded incident of a flood surge of such proportions in that area going back at least 300 years. Many damaged areas were well back from the beaches some of them many miles inland.
Since it is private property, people have a right to build (within lawful requirements and policies) and if you build, you have to have insurance.
Most Freepers don’t realize it but a very significant portion of New Jersey is definately NOT Obama country.
Unfortunately, these areas which tend to be rural or suburban, are outnumbered by the the more populous urban regions (Newark, Paterson, Jersey City, New Brunswick, Trenton, Camden, Atlantic City).
I was here in New Orleans for katrina, they fleeced hundreds of billions in fake claims, and the politicians stole more from America
so it's up to me to pay for someone Else’s mistake or idiocy of living in a flood zone. take your hours of daily wasting time ,watching the game or tv , or the marxist news media and instead work and save and buy several properties how about that instead of relying on the government? how about that?
Step down off your soapbox and please don’t tell me what I believe.
Where people live is irrelevant, last time I checked it is a free country after all and I bet we could find hidden flaws or dangers in almost every place. Living at the shore on the mid-Atlantic is not particularly dangerous. this was a freak storm, not a reoccurring event. The Jersey shore is not wrecked by hurricanes on a regular basis and I hate to break this to you Einstein but marinas such as the one in the article are always located on water.
I was stating a fact which is that people paid into insurance that was freely and legally available to them. now they have claims which are not being paid. They have every right to compalin since they entered into good faith contracts.
I mean seriously....how old are you ?? You don’t understand that ????
