EDITORIAL: EPA’s chilling effect

Alaskan liberty goes up in smoke under new air regulations

Not-so-unintended consequences of overregulation are in the air. Newly adopted rules limiting airborne soot imposed by bureaucrats in Washington threaten to freeze the choices — and toes — of individuals living more than 4,000 miles away in subarctic Alaska. Thanks to authoritarian overreach, the freedom of America’s “last frontier” may not last much longer.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) waited until after President Obama’s re-election to announce drastic new restrictions on soot produced by industry smokestacks, diesel trucks and even ordinary sources like wood-burning stoves. The new standard for the great outdoors reduces the legal limit for airborne fine-particle matter from 15 micrograms per cubic meter of air to 12 micrograms. To put in context how overly restrictive that is, secondhand tobacco smoke in a closed car can expose a person to 3,000-4,000 micrograms of soot per cubic meter, according to the agency.

The worst aspect of the agency’s one-size-fits-all scheme is that the same rules that purports to clean up the air above U.S. megalopolises apply to the 97,000 residents of Fairbanks and its surrounding county, tucked amidst the wilderness of central Alaska. In January, the average low temperature is 15-25 degrees below zero and many homes turn to wood stoves to keep their heating costs under control. The county had already been on the EPA’s “non-attainment area” list before the new regulations. Compliance will be even harder now.

I have watched TV programs on Alaska and it’s people. I think most of these Alaskans are FIERCELY independent. I have a feeling this could end very badly.

Thanks for those photos. I’ve said for years that if the liberals really cared for the environment they would ease up in the USA to allow more mining, drilling, manufacturing, etc. where we at least HAVE environmental and safety standards.

The right thing to do, for both the environment and our economy, would be to INCREASE the number on the amount of pollutants one can release in the USA. (Not completely - but just ease the restrictions back a bit).

“What’s it gonna take for people to just start saying “F’ you! I’m not complying.” to these goons from DC?”

Obama and Holder choose which laws they will and will not enforce. Why shouldn’t we choose which regulations we will and will not obey?

So an unelected reg-writer will shut down our woodstove; yet somehow the mega-landfill ten miles away that causes methane odor to seep through our homes and cars will undoubtedly get an exemption. That’s where the Sandy wreckage is going, btw.

bimboeruption ~: “ What happened to States Rights? “

What about human rights ?
check out : << http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2975033/posts >>

and I quote (from the article) :” The Obama Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says no law empowers any judge to stop it from conducting illegal scientific experiments on seniors, children and the sick. “
or that :” that EPA researchers are exposing unwary and genetically susceptible senior citizens to air pollutants the agency says can cause a variety of serious cardiac and respiratory problems, including sudden death. “

The inmates running the asylum.

No kidding! Let those regulating EPA pansies spend a week at my house, where we hit -27 below zero last week (in California, not Alaska) and see if they could take the cold without a woodstove.

We have got to learn how to say “NO, I WILL NOT COMPLY!”

What are they going to do? Arrest thousands of us for using wood stoves?

And if they did arrest us, I’d gladly take this case before a jury. I would demand that the jury be informed of its rights to engage in “jury nullification” — which is very real — should they find the law to be unjust.

Or just let the EPA knock on some Alaskan’s door in the middle of winter and tell him to put out the fire. Yeah, right.

When the EPA goon knocks on your door (in Alaska) immediately capture them, strip them naked, give them a stick of wood and a match and then throw them outside in the snow.

I would take all bets that the EPA agent would light the stick.

EPA destroying our country, and also read the article on how the FDA is cracking down on food production. That is why B. Hussein Obama is a Communist Dictator.

.

. Oh yeah that's going to help innovation and productivity? NOT. government moves at snails pace and is dictatorial . leave the free market alone you socialists pos, including you communist obama pos.

How much more are we going to take? We should secede and ban the stupid FDA,EPA, IRS, government schools etc.

Government should only do the military, border control, international issues.

my Constitution

We the people understand that government concentrates power and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. so in order to limit government and to preserve our freedom and individual rights, to protect our bill of rights we set up this constitution. We understand that in addition to being corrupt, evil , inefficient government just never works as well as the free market (capitallism) by orders of magnitude. So government should be limited to just the military, border control , immigration limiting, and international issues. All other functions should be left to the people and the free market. Only laws which protect individual rights to ownership, including gun ownership that preserve life and individual rights such as free speech, right to privacy, right to own property shall be allowed(of course including local laws against assault, murder, stealing, rape, trespassing). but we realize that science, government and especially the media will create false crisis in order to con the people into voting in more government power and at the same time less individual rights ( as in the “fiscal cliff”, global warming hoaxes of the media, government and science). We realize that the only threat to us is the government and media and such fake science. With google, the millions of products in the free market (thousands of which come out every day and many which cost only a $1 at the dollar tree) we can find the solution to practically all our problems and don't need government at any level , nor the media to tell us what to do or to solve our problems for us with all their government red tape( fema) and thousands of rules and regulations that don't make sense and slow down the free market.

This is only a first draft I just came up with and is not complete. any one have any ides to improve or add or delete of modify?

I remember a joke that the cost of an apartment was the ultimate form of birth control in Japan / London / name the dense city. Packing people in forces them to see children as a luxury or expensive product. Literally no room for four kids in a rabbit hutch apartment.

I would add that quotas and tariffs protecting American beet and cane sugar growers have impoverished Central America and the Caribbean, while causing vast increases in obesity and diabetes from corn syrup. Countless medical expenses crippling Medicare is an unintended result.
That moratoriums on drilling and green energy subsidies empower our worst enemies and impose a crushing financial blow to lower and middle class families.

In Virginia, they recently tried to force taxpayers to spend $300 million on a project to change how much stormwater was running into a creek – something the EPA has no authority to demand.

So how did the EPA try to skirt the law? By treating WATER as a pollutant.

Ken Cuccinelli(Attorney General of Virginia) helped defeat them.

The rule of law is long lost since the people (mostly) don’t care and refuse to accept they live in a one party system, for decades now. Moral equivalence and all that. Only the little people have to obey.
