Seems a bit of a stretch that they were able to make him sell his own weapons.

For what? An 'export violation.'

How is this relevant to personal firearms ownership?

I suspect that the real problem is that he lied to the US Postal Service what was in the packages.

Also, while an AR-upper isn't considered a “firearm” in the US by ATF, a lot of other places in he world would consider it the major part of a firearm.
