The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group, is demanding that a southern Ohio middle school remove a framed photo of Jesus Christ. The photo has hung in the school building for several decades. The Madison Wisconsin-based group is citing an “unidentified complainant” in its crusade to have the removed from the public school.
The Jackson Middle School is a part of the only school district which serves the Ohio town. The demand from the atheist group to remove the framed image of Jesus Christ began as a local story in our rural region, but has since garnered national headlines.
Jackson Superintendent of Schools Phil Howard had this to say during an interview with Pete Wilson of The Telegram, the local paper which serves the region:
“I will follow a directive from a court, a judge, or a vote by our board of education to do so. But I will certainly not take the picture down because a group that knows nothing about the culture of our community wants it to be taken down. I personally support it being there and so does every member of our board of education.”
The Freedom From Religion Foundation reportedly consists of approximately 18,000 members. An excerpt from the letter the atheist group sent to the Ohio school reads:

This is about 30 miles from us—we live down on the OH/WV border (Ohio side, obviously). It’s the first I’ve heard of it. This part of the state is very conservative and religion is a way of life. Prayer is not unheard of at school functions like graduations and other ceremonies. Jackson is a town full of good God-fearing people—can’t imagine they would stand for this garbage.
Is the photo autographed?
Tell them it’s a portrait of Barry Gibb. They won’t know the difference and who doesn’t love the Bee Gees?
To be fair, they should just put up an empty frame next to it.

Many, probably most, atheists consider Jesus bar-Joseph to have been a real person.
Actually, there's been a growing movement to deny the historicity of Jesus over the last ten years. Claims that Jesus was a complete fiction are starting to get pretty common these days. I don't know what percentage of atheists buy into that, but their number is growing rapidly.
The irony is that they claim to be all about "facts" and "science" and "reason" with this claim, but purely secular archaeology strongly supports the existence of a real person. Jesus has more historical documentation than Alexander the Great and nobody doubts the he was real.
Sounds like a “Freedom FROM Information” request.
The news last night showed footage of a Board of Education meeting where they booed the woman making the point for the FFR group. Then there was a vote, and all I could see were raised hands for keeping the picture. Good for them! The picture stays for now!
Doesn’t surprise me in the least! Thank the Lord for sanity in our small communities. Their neighbors down here in Gallia County stand with them.

Claims that Jesus never existed at all have been around for at least a century.
I don’t know any serious historian who gives such claims any credence.
There is little contemporaneous secular evidence of Jesus’ life, which is exactly what we would expect given the description of his life in the gospels. But I think the evidence he was a real person is overwhelming, though the details of his life are debatable.

Perhaps because it is not a valid argument. An image of what someone thinks Jesus looked like is not a talisman against worldly evils. Allegiance to Jesus will on balance make things more difficult in this world. He said as much.

Many of them like Promethean imagery. Never mind that Prometheus is a Titan from Greek mythology.
Atheists spend a lot of time trying to destroy things they don’t believe in. If God and Jesus don’t exist, what’s their problem?

If you read what I wrote,
“No Jesus, no prayer, no protection from the enemy”
I did not make a direct correlation between the image and the presence, you did.
Your argument states that the image is not an issue.
It IS THE issue in this situation.
Your argument sides with the athiests, allowing them to get rid of the image. They say it’s valuable, but you say it isn’t/ If you were the decider your argument is that the image can be removed as it is worthless.
So why is it going to court.
You might just go in and say why you
re against the image and sidle up.
But don’t bring me into it, I’m commenting on the image which is central to the issue in this case.
