I'm only 64, but I do believe I heard the term "gray" back in the original Black Panther days, in the 60s. Here's a database of slurs against white people. Scroll down to the G's and you'll find it. Slurs.

Weren’t ‘Seniors’ referred to as ‘Gray Panthers’ at one time?
Probably more of a ‘regional’ thing also.
Some names catch on and others don’t.

A lot depends on what part of country you are from or in also.
I left NY in Summer 1956@16, went to CA for Sr yr HS, quit and went in USN in 56 - whole Boot Camp company was from AZ, SO CA.
Well when ‘they’ were discussing going on liberty etc they referred to ‘going out and get some ....’, I was taken aback because ‘in my corner of the world’ that was part of the male equipment but on the West Coast it wasn’t... For a while I wondered what I had gotten myself into when ‘they’ suggested going on liberty.....
