CHARLESTON, W.Va. — U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who came to West Virginia as a young man from one of the world's richest families to work on antipoverty programs and remained in the state to build a political legacy, announced Friday he will not seek a sixth term.

The 75-year-old Democrat's decision, coming at a time when his popularity in a conservative state had been waning for sparring with the powerful mining industry and supporting President Barack Obama, told The Associated Press ahead of his formal announcement that it was time to retire.

Because he was going to lose miserable after attacking the coal industry last summer. Once Congresswomen Shelly Moore-Caputo jumped into the race and the first polls taken already showed she had a lead, the writing was on the wall.

The bad news is the if Rock would have run, there is no way he could has signed onto gun control and stood a chance in West Virgina. Now he is free to be his liberal gun grabbing self...

THIS IS BIG NEWS.

Jay Rockefeller is one of the biggest, most powerful demo libs in the u.s. senate. He was unbeatable due to the pork her brought to WV.

This is a HUGE opportunity for the Republican Party to claim his seat.

Shelly Moore-Caputo is a RINO.

The GOP Establishment will see to it that a GENUINE conservative never wins this seat.

Not when our candidates fail to engage their brain before speaking and consider how their comments will be used against them. 2014 is a real opportunity, but the GOP needs better candidates. Several red states, MT, AK,SD, LA, and AR in addition to WV could provide enough to gain control of the Senate - don’t really see any Republicans at risk. Off year election should favor the GOP. Who knows, maybe even MN will wake up and vote the clown out.
