From the article,
“I think the Republican Party right now is having an identity problem, and I’m still a Republican,” Powell said. “But in recent years, there’s been a significant shift to the right, and we have seen what that shift has produced: two losing presidential campaigns.”

Powell ...will ...never ...get ...it.

The Republican party is having an identify problem, so I think General Powell is correct as far as that goes. Perhaps we should thank him for pointing it out. The problem, however, is that it is becoming a Democrat Party Lite rather than too conservative. Squeaker Speaker Boehner and his allies are seeing to that.

There is already one Democrat Party and we don't need another. We need a conservative party to represent those of us who are not, and don't want to be, affiliated with either of the two Democrat parties.

There will be multiple problems in creating a conservative party -- the "news" and entertainment media, politicians who are happy to be elected or reelected regardless of whether as Democrats or Democrats Lite, and even the indifference of many others who should care enough to work and help such a party through its birthing pains and into maturity.

If enough of us care and get to work, the prospects are not too bad. If not enough care, that's it: down the spiral drain goes the nation we knew and loved.
