President Barack Obama on Monday rejected any negotiation with Republicans over the most pressing U.S. fiscal issue, refusing to trade cuts in government spending in exchange for raising the borrowing limit.
"If the goal is to make sure that we are being responsible about our debt and our deficit - if that's the conversation we're having, I'm happy to have that conversation," Obama said. "What I will not do is to have that negotiation with a gun at the head of the American people," he told a news conference.
Republican leaders quickly reiterated their demand that increasing the debt limit must be accompanied by spending cuts.
With an agreement to prevent the so-called fiscal cliff of sharp spending cuts and tax increases barely two weeks old, Obama faces another fiscal showdown with congressional Republicans.
A trio of deadlines looms around the end of February: the need to raise the debt ceiling, automatic deep spending cuts temporarily put off in the fiscal cliff deal, and the end of a stopgap government funding measure.

Why should he negotiate? The media will back him up and paint the Republicans as the bad guys.
There are two ways out of this:
1. “Shut ‘er down.”
2. Monetize the debt.
The former is closer to the responsible choice but it will be VERY painful in the short run. It will probably cause civil unrest and, eventually, civil war, during which our enemies will come in and we’ll be eazy pickin’s.
The latter puts off the inevitable for a short time. But the hyper-inflation to follow will devastate the economy, causing us to collapse (probably along with europe) and our enemies - especially the ones that hold a lot of the now worthless debt - will come in via war, and the whole world will get so ugly that it will long for the days of 1944.
The time for a relatively painless solution is long gone. Frankly, it left before Obama was even elected, not that he hasn’t upped the stakes.
I wonder how Boehner will justify the up-coming capitulation?
Why should he negotiate when media backs him up and the Republicans agree with him.
I ask myself, besides a regular diet of empty rhetoric, what exactly of Obama’s mad plans have the Republicans even bothered to stop cold, or reverse, or even slowed?
Rubio is off yukking it up on immigration, Rand Paul and McConnell have been off dutifully burning daylight in Israel and Boehner & Company are on all systems pout, showing chicken legs rather than muscle.
DC is the same as emptied of Republicans it seems to me. But for goofy McCain barking on Sunday talk shows, who would know R’s exist?
I’ve got lots of popcorn ready to pop. Shut it down.
There must be a USG shutdown and there will be, unless our representatives give in to the power crazed, Emperor O.
“What I will not do is to have that negotiation with a gun at the head of the American people,”
Unfortunately that gun isn’t pointed at we the people, it is pointed at the Moneychangers and Wall Street, and will destroy their fraudulent schemes, which is precisely what needs to be done. I thought we made Involuntary Servitude Illegal a long time ago??
On the other hand Obama is holding a knife to the throats of the American demanding he gets the debt limit increase or he will slaughter the infidels to the delight of Allah...
Hey democrats! Alinsky that!
Keep the popcorn in the warmer. I can almost assure you that it will be a cold day in hell before there will be a show to watch that is engaging enough to enjoy the popcorn. Look at the evidence for any hope. There is none, sorrowfully.
Can you even envision John Boehner putting his paw down about anything Bahrock? Imagine Boo Hoo shutting the guvmint down?
In a million years, I can’t see it. Hardball is hard and Boo is a pooh.
“Republican leaders quickly reiterated their demand that increasing the debt limit must be accompanied by spending cuts.”
You are kidding. Talk about a Lucy held football.
Are you guys learning nothing?
Pass me some of that evidence for any hope in Boo Hoo Boehner and Muggy Mc Connell shutting down even the handle on their faucet, if they can obfuscate and avoid it altogether.
Dems have gotten whatever they wanted for 6 years now by just threatening to cause disaster (and then have the media blame Republicans) .
It’s time they were forced to find a new tactic.
There’s no way out for the big spending political/regulator class. Print more funny money, and they’ll buy less and less with it. It will lead to bond collapse, high rates, business shutting down, etc. The way of tax/fee hikes is the same direction (down), only faster.
Much smaller government ahead, regardless of their huffing and puffing. Applies to both hysterical, fascist political parties: the party of federal big spending and the party of big funding to local governments (pork). Their shutting down your constitutional rights in such chaotic ways, because they’re out of their minds with guilt and fear (and many of them, probably with drug abuse).
What was the phrase he used? Hit the reset button...yes, that’s it.
See tag line.
“If that’s the conversation we’re having”? Who talks like that? God, what an arrogant pants-wetter.
Sigh.
We need actions, not words. Republicans in the House should pass a budget (probably some kind of modified freeze) with significant spending cuts (take your pick), and attach the debt limit increase to that.
Republicans can then approach the debate saying that we have (1) already funded the government, so we're not causing any shutdown; and (2) already passed a debt limit increase, so again we're not causing a shutdown. If anything shuts down, it's because the democrats refuse to move a responsible budget.
Pass the blasted thing, and then stay on message. If Harry Reid bestirs himself enough to finally move a budget in the Senate, we can go to conference and deal fairly. But if the dems sit on the sideline, we need to be occupying the high ground. Pass a budget. Now.
