WASHINGTON (AP) - Declaring "we are not a deadbeat nation," President Obama warned on Monday that Social Security checks and veterans' benefits will be delayed if congressional Republicans fail to increase the government's borrowing authority in a looming showdown over the nation's debt and spending.

Many SS recipients are getting food assistance. They have to in order to survive. So, the elderly and EBT recipients are sometimes one and the same.

All politicians do and say the same thing. When cities want levies to pass, they will shut down a fire station. (happened here not too long ago. Then when city council was successful in getting tax hikes - wham! They opened it back up. One year, they shut off bus service for high school students in order to get a levy passed. Seems the schools just keep coming back to the well until its dry. Much of the funds go for administrative costs, and not for the kiddies.

How bout that $100 million for the aquarium in Brazil? How bout the millions spent on crap like bike trails all across the Country? How bout the $125 million endowment for the arts?

Drops in the bucket to be sure but there are enough of them to fill a supertanker.

Its a tried and true tactic.

Spend lots of time talking about cutting the big politically sensitive things that are least likely to be cut. In the mean time, billions can continue to flow into a million small things than no one will miss if they were gone.

Again, he lies. Of course, he lies.

Allocation of revenues can be a legislative issue, starting in the House of Representatives. Social Security has a bit of protection, but with this administration even that is tenuous, at best.
VA benefits? That would be a mistake. A huge mistake.

Welfare checks? Open season, IMO. Food stamps (EBT cards)? Cut ‘em off. We are heading for a conflagration anyway. I’d just as soon get it over with before my children and grandchildren have to deal with it.

"Welfare checks and food stamp payments will continue as usual..."

EXACTLY. Republicans should put this crap RIGHT BACK ON the Food Stamp King. Threatening the benefits of those who worked for years to fund their SS benefits is cowardly and criminal. No mention of EBT cards running out...it's ALWAYS the productive who get threatened and eventually screwed. Traitorous commie bastard POS.

Agreed. For starters, NOT ANOTHER G** DAMNED PENNY to countries who hate us. The goat-bangers can toil and die in sand hell for all I care, and we’d ALL be better off for it. We don’t need their stinin’ oil, either.

Same ol’, same ol’.

This threat is trotted out every time, and it is on the order of the boy who cried “Wolf!” repeatedly.

If anything, the House of Representatives should authorize a debt limit no higher than the last one Bush asked for, a request that no less than Barack Obama claimed was “too much” at the time.

On March 16, 2006, declaring themselves outraged by such spending, Democrat Senators Reid, Durbin, Schumer, and Murray all voted against raising the debt limit. So did every other Democrat — including Sen. Barack Obama.

Why was it “spending” then, and not “spending” now? Curious how and why the language gets changed when it is something YOU want.

House Republicans should be in control of this situation. They can pass a responsible budget with real and meaningful cuts as well as debt funding for that budget. No more continuing resolutions. Then go home.

Reid and Obama can either pass and sign the budget bill or not. If not, the government shuts down and it is their fault, no matter what the media says. After 2-3 weeks they’ll be forced to come to terms if the Republicans in the House stand tall in the face of the media and Democrat lies that will follow. This is the way the Constitution was designed to work.

Obama is playing hard ball in the media even though he does not have the upper hand based on the Constitution. The only reason he has the upper hand is the Republicans in the House lack the leadership, courage and patriotic zeal to stand behind what should be their principles and do what is right by the nation.

The courage and duty required today of Boehner and the Republicans in the House in this budget battle comes no where close to the courage required of Washington and his men at Trenton or the duty and courage shown by the US soldiers at DDay. The nation is in grave peril and these elected representatives need to stand up and do their duty to stop the irresponsible spending that is destroying the economy. Being publicly lied about and chastised by Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the media does not even come close to voluntarily risking one’s life for the country. If these men and women, elected by the citizens who still value liberty, cannot rise to the challenge of enduring a firestorm of words, then the nation we knew is truly lost.

Yes, he specifically called out Social Security recipients (of which I am about to become one) and the military. We know where his priorities are. Parties, golf, and the constant vacation, while real Americans take it on the chin - thats Obama.

The need for entitlement reform is obvious but the simple fact is that the GOP is getting their butts kicked on it and it just isn’t going to happen at this point.

The people rioting over section 8 housing vouchers couldn’t care less if the endowment for the arts was cut. They don’t care about the EPA. They don’t care about aid for foreign nations. They care about themselves right now and there won’t be any entitlement reform until that changes.

Meanwhile we should make the cuts we can.

Just close down Washington for several months with federal employees, including President, Vp, Congress, etc losing their paychecks and secret service security(real layoff) and no payment after the fact. This might even balance the budget or reduce the deficit!

Let them live on unemployment benefits!
