NRA: Membership Has Grown by 250,000 in One Month

A quarter of a million people have signed up for new NRA memberships ahead of the White House Task Force's findings.

A day before President Barack Obama is scheduled to release Vice President Joe Biden's recommendations to curb gun violence in the United States, the National Rifle Association told U.S. News and World Report that they have seen membership grow by 250,000 in the month since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Politico reported membership had grown by more than 100,000 five days ago. The NRA says that when Politico reported the story, membership was close to 200,000, but the number has drastically grown in just five days. The association now has over 4.25 million members, but the NRA says that number is always fluctuating as memberships expire and new members join.

"I would say that every time President Obama opens his mouth and Sen. [Dianne] Feinstein opens her mouth and they talk about gun bans and restricting the rights of law abiding Americans, people pay attention to that and sign up," says Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA's public affairs director.

The growing rate of membership comes as Obama is slated to announce both legislative proposals and executive orders related to Biden's findings on how to stop the spread of gun violence. The vice president has said that his committee is mulling over stringent restrictions on high-capacity magazines, a national gun sale database and closing the gun show loophole, which allows unlicensed gun dealers to sell firearms to customers without background checks at gun shows.

Biden sat down with the NRA last week, in what the association described as a disappointing meeting.

"We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment," the NRA said in a released statement Thursday. "While claiming that no policy proposals would be 'prejudged,' this task force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners—honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans."

New members can join the NRA with a one-year membership for $35, a two-year membership for $60, or become life members for $1,000. Members can also pay $25 up front, then be placed on a payment schedule until their lifetime dues are completely paid. Members receive an "official NRA members-only shooter's cap," a membership card and a decal and invitations to special NRA-only events.

I’ll become a lifer later this year.

I switched from yearly renewal to lifer just a couple of weeks ago. They were having a great offer for existing members - become a lifer for $600.00 instead of the normal $1,000.00. It was too good a deal to pass on.

I joined the Saturday after Sandy Hook.
Thinking about getting an NRA credit card for ammo purchases, too.

I've never so much as touched a gun.

Dad, for some reason, quit hunting before I was born [WWII had something to do with it, I suspect] and I just never learned.

Well, it's crunch-time now. I just signed up with the NRA and must begin to research a good hand-gun for a beginner and find somewhere to learn how to shoot. Must hurry -- I live in New York.

Time grows short.

Check gun shows for an older .22 cal Smith & Wesson revolver w/ 4 inch barrel.
Dependable, low noise, and a good beginner’s gun.

Six things I’d like to see:

1) A class lawsuit against the libs, asking for financial damages against them personally for malicious violation of the 2nd Amendment

2) Another class action lawsuit specifically against Obama, for violation of the provisions of the Constitution prohibiting taking of property without just compensation.

3) A major public relations campaign that produces multiple movies and ads depicting the unlawful actions of the federal government in their efforts to illegally take or restrict firearms.

4) Tomorrow, after Obama surrounds himself with children, I’d like the spokespeople to go on tv and ask about the children who were murdered at Ruby Ridge and at Waco - by the illegal actions of the Federal government.

5) I’d like the public to be asked the question: Why is it wrong for the public to violate laws by committing actions that do not harm anyone, but it’s alright for the Federal government to do so in their enforcement?

6) Congress pass a law that prohibits any government agent or official, policeman, or security agent from having access to any type of weapon or ammunition that the public is prohibited to have. After all, if AR15s and large capacity magazines, or semi-automatic pistols are not necessary for the public to have, then those others listed do not need them either.

I have had my eye on a Taurus 357 for a field gun (Back ordered, of course). The Taurus comes with a free NRA membership. Since I am already a Life member, I will gift it to someone.

I got one of the NRA range bags a few years ago.

It’s acutally quite nice. Lots of compartments, padding, etc.

The NRA should have 10+ million members. 100 million gun owners, half the households in the US contain a gun, yet only 4 million NRA members. That’s a shame.

Look for a 1950-60-70 made piece.
A “Kit gun” is the most desirable.
