Twas the Friday before Christmas, and while most Americans were enjoying time with family and friends, the bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) were stirring quietly about, preparing to release its long-overdue evaluation of the Head Start program.
Head Start is an $8 billion per year federal preschool program, designed to improve the kindergarten readiness of low-income children. Since its inception in1965, taxpayers have spent more than $180 billion on the program.

The first-grade evaluation found that any benefits the children may have accrued while in the Head Start program had dissipated by the time they reached first grade.

After I posted I looked at salaries and I could see that the local staffs didn’t make a lot of money.

Hardly free. My wife was a preschool administrator for a parochial school. It was a thousand bucks a month per kid ...and there was a waiting list.
I stand corrected! It is often expensive babysitting. ;-)
Yeah, I used to say to my wife... Mr and Mrs “Smith” have 3 kids in your preschool, that’s 3000 a month and Mrs “Smith” needs to work to pay the preschool bill. Why doesn’t she just stay home and raise the kids herself?

Wow, that’s sad. We live in the age of the tyranny of the expert. People actually believe that kids need somebody with a Ph.D. in education to teach their kids the alphabet.
