On MLK Holiday, Walking For Civil Rights And The Second Amendment

When Charles "Chuck" Hicks does the Martin Luther King Jr. Day peace and freedom walks Saturday, he'll also be taking a step for what the National Rifle Association has dubbed "National Rifle Appreciation Day." That's because Hicks is the son of Robert Hicks, a prominent leader of the legendary Deacons for Defense and Justice — an organization of black men in Louisiana who used shotguns and rifles to repel attacks by white vigilantes during the 1960s.

"The Klan would drive through our neighborhood shooting at us, shooting into our homes," recalled Hicks, 66, who grew up in Bogalusa, La., and has been a civil rights activist in the District for more than 35 years. "The black men in the community wouldn't stand for it. You shoot at us, we shoot back at you. I'm convinced that without our guns, my family and many other black people would not be alive today."...

Hicks, past president of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1808, will probably pay homage to the Deacons for Defense and Justice and the courage they showed in protecting their communities.

"Growing up, we had a lot of admiration for the Deacons," Hicks said. "Their philosophy was, 'It's better to die on your feet than live on your knees.'?"

With guns in hand, they didn't have to do either.

This is a classic example of why self-defense is a particularly important right for minorities (who are more vulnerable to crime and less able to count on police response). The opposition has pulled a coup by creating the image of RKBA advocates as out-of-touch old vanilla white guys.

I lived in Durham, NC for five years. Durham is interesting in that it is the only county in the state of North Carolina that is, by law, allowed to require the actual registration of handguns (as opposed to having to get a permit from your county sheriff to purchase/obtain a handgun, which is statewide). They were grandfathered in under the law passed in the early 1930s which otherwise banned required handgun registration in the state’s other 99 counties. The reason? Durham had then and has now a large black population. The handgun registration law was a Jim Crow law designed to keep urban blacks disarmed.

The irony is, of course, 80 years on, now those very same urban blacks, who now run the city and county I’ve dubbed “Zimbabwe With a Ballpark,” are the ones who want EVERYBODY disarmed. Because between the registration requirement and the sheriff’s office’s foot-dragging on issuing purchase permits, Durham County/City is the hardest place in the state to arm yourself with a handgun. And the high violent crime rate shows it.

The Klan members were southern democrats, the Dixiecrat's. The Democrats wanted them unarmed back then the same way they want them aborted and disarmed today. The blacks still vote and support those who, to this very day, still want to keep them them depopulated, disarmed, and dependent.
I find it hard to understand why the blacks still follow their Dixiecrat masters the way they do. It's so self defeating.
