Mayor Thompson Supports President Obama Common-sense Gun Reforms

Harrisburg Mayor Linda D. Thompson joined President Obama in Washington today to call upon Congress to strengthen America’s gun laws to confront mass shootings and common gun violence by strengthening America’s gun laws following the broadest public pressure for gun control in decades.

At the White House event at noon, Mayor Thompson said, “this is a bold and comprehensive plan to end the sale of military-styled weaponry in America and end mass gun violence. The president is offering sensible solutions that Americans across the nation are demanding right now.”

The President announced plans to introduce legislation next week that includes a ban on assault weapons, limits on high-capacity magazines, expanded background checks for gun purchases and new gun trafficking laws to crack down on the spread of weapons across the country.

“These are precisely the actions the Mayors Against Illegal Guns have called for since the tragedy in Newton, Conn. last month,” Thompson said. “We congratulate the President today.”

President Obama promised to act without Congressional approval to increase the enforcement of existing gun laws and improve the flow of information among federal agencies to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others who shouldn’t have them. ....

Mayor Thompson said she will call on Pennsylvania representatives in Washington to “support a tougher ban on military style assault weapons, limit the number of rounds that can be in a magazine to 10, and require criminal background checks for all gun sales.”

“It’s up to lawmakers in Congress now to pass these measures that will help save lives. The American people won’t accept inaction any longer.” She added. “We have worked for six years to help make this day happened.”

Impeaching Obama will be nearly impossible, but conservatives should pick out one of these mayors or governors who are supporting this stuff and run a recall.

We don’t have anyone in Arizona who fits the bill, but I bet someone could be found. Find a city totally out of guns and ammunition where the leaders are shooting off their mouths. Hang out at gun stores and offer petitions for circulation to those who are waiting for their back-orders to be filled. It will give them something to do to work out their frustration.

...strengthen America’s gun laws to confront mass shootings...

Ah yes, because criminals always follow the law...{snort} "Yeah, I'm ready to kill dozens...What!? I might break a firearms law? Oh, okay, I'll just go back to staring at my naval."

Just why are they going to "confront mass shootings?" Why is this so important? Here's a hint people, the cold hard truth is they are not. Yes they are horrific, yes they are over publicized. Way, way over publicized. How many people died in "mass shootings" last year? Fewer than 100. Lets take a step back from the high-pressure used-car-salesman like emotional hysteria intentionally being whipped up by the would-be gun grabbers.

Just how significant is 100 deaths in a year in the US? Insignificant. Yes that's cold, yes these deaths are no doubt a tragedy for family and friends. But in the context of a country of 300+ million they are not worth fighting over. Consider the following tidbits from the CDC for a little perspective:

Deaths in 2010:

Tuberculosis - 569
Meningitis - 608
Nutritional deficiencies - 2948
Influenza & pneumonia - 50,097
Hernia - 1832
Motor vehicle accidents - 35,332
Assault/homicide (firearm) - 11,078
Drug induced deaths - 40,393

So you're far more likely to die of meningitis than you are to get caught up in a "mass shooting." Don't see anyone clamoring for mandatory hand sanitizer... 50K deaths by flu? I don't see anyone demanding mandatory flu shots. 1800+ deaths by hernia? Don't see anyone calling for a limit on the size/weight of, well, everything we might ever pick up. Oh, and many of those 11K victims of firearms might have been able to save their lives if they had had a firearm to defend themselves. There's a reason the Colt was called "the great equalizer."

Perspective people. The MSM and gun-grabbers who want to take away our freedoms are crassly, criminally using this event. Save our freedoms, defend our Constitution.

Chief of Police from Houston was on TV tonight wholeheartedly agreeing with everything BO is saying about controlling guns. I’m sure we can all look forward to hearing from our very own Sheila Jackson L who certainly won’t miss an opportunity for time in front of the camera to support BO and the Chief of Police. And then we’ll hear from our gay Mayor, Quanelle X and who knows who else will come out of the woodwork.

While all of this is going on Boner will mail out yet another press release and Republican Congressman Culberson will be still trying to explain why he voted Yes for $60 Billion aid for Sandy.

At the White House event at noon, Mayor Thompson said, “this is a bold and comprehensive plan to end the sale of military-styled weaponry in America and end mass gun violence. The president is offering sensible solutions that Americans across the nation are demanding right now.”

Rather than taking guns away from law abiding citizens, would it not make more sense to pass or enforce laws that keep guns away from mentally ill people? Or to teach people who have guns to be more responsible in allowing access to their gun collections? Or, to look at the real causes and effects of the mass shooting?

Gun control increases the chances of gun violence. Why take away guns from citizens so only criminals have guns? Why are there repeated attempts to get rid of the Second Amendment? Ignorance and hysteria are not good foundations for sensible laws; ignorance and hysteria support insane and counter productive laws.
