Each middle school and high school has an employee that also verifies all SSL activities. There is a list of pre-approved activities (liberal things usually) and you can submit for approval any sort of activity prior to starting the “job”. It has to be an organization that is tax exempt and the work is suppose to be supervised. For example, you can’t volunteer to help a neighbor with his lawn no matter what the circumstances (for example, even if he is a retired disabled vet). The organization cannot have religious ties either. So, you can’t volunteer at your local church. That being said... yes, there are interesting “ways” around some of the service hours. 75 hours is a minimum. Maryland universities usually will look more at students that have 296 hours and above.
