A colleague spotted this eye-popping statistic by the former president and wondered if it was correct....
In the highly charged debate over guns, it is important for politicians on both sides to get their facts straight. In this case, the available data shows that Clinton was way off-base in his assertion, making an exaggerated claim — which his office would not even defend.
Ordinarily, this might have been a Four Pinocchio claim. Given the fuzziness of the data and questions about definitions, we are going to cut Clinton a bit of slack in the final ruling. But such uncertainty in the data means politicians need to be very careful in making claims about gun violence.
That depends on what the meaning of “is” is.

Actually a lot of the public’s intrest in “assault weapons” is due to Clinton, because these guns weren’t selling in near the numbers they were until he demonized them. Now that there are so many out there, yes, they will be involved in some shootings.

However, it is also relevant that the rate of people murdered, by shooting and other means, has been declining for 20 years, and is presently back not far above the all time low of the mid 50s.
It seems strange to obsess about mass shootings in isolation from this fact. As if the lives of 20 children killed in individual murders are less important than 20 killed in a mass shooting.
Most people know about Monica’s BJ, and what Bubba did in the sink —old hat. Or that he was on the phone and made the decision to commit US forces to Bosnia while Monica was blowing him under his desk.
What most do NOT know (and this is footnote 233 or something, in the Starr Report) is that Monica and Bill had ***oral/ANAL sex, also.***
It’s something that is very easily looked up.
And if he really wants to go there and investigate the causal relationship between the ban and mass shootings, how about this: Since there were hardly any before, and half after, then half had to have been DURING, so it seems that the ban must have CAUSED mass shootings!! There's liars, DAMN liars, statisticians, and Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton Caught In Lie Over Mass Shootings “Fact” January 16, 2013 by Tim BrownIn a 2007 book titled Mass Murder in the United States: A History, author Grant Duwe, director of research and evaluation at the Minnesota Department of Corrections enlightens the public to the data regarding mass public shootings.
Duwe identified 156 mass public shootings in the past 100 years of the United States’ history. He defines such shootings as those where at least four people or more are killed publicly with a firearm in less than twenty-four hours. These events occur at schools, restaurants, places of employment and they exclude any other connection with crimes such as robbery, drugs or gangs.
The data he shows indicates that 32 mass public shootings have occurred since the weapons ban expired on September 13, 2004, including seven this past year, 2012. That is only about twenty percent, not 50 percent as Clinton declared.
When we look at Mass Public Shootings By the Decade, Duwe lists them as follows:

While defining “mass shooting” differently might bring about different results, according to the Washington Post, a Clinton spokesperson was unwilling to comment or give the source of the data that Clinton cited. So we are unable to verify exactly where he is getting his numbers.

The current use of “fact” as in, “Clinton’s Over-The-Top’Fact’on Mass Shootings,” is most tiresome. It is not a “fact,” but a claim. You can not make up facts. Facts are pesky little substantiated statements or presentations of truth. They can not be made up,nor created out of hocus pocus, thin liberal air. Facts are set upon their granite base more firmly than a grave marker.
Does Waco qualify as a mass shooting, or just a mass murder of American citizens who committed no crime?
