Just a day after Phil Mickelson said he needed to make "drastic changes" in his life because his tax rate was going through the roof, he is trying to walk back his comments.
He released a statement through his spokesman T.R. Reinman in which Mickelson apologizes to anyone who may have been offended: "Finances and taxes are a personal matter and I should not have made my opinions on them public. I apologize to those I have upset or insulted and assure you I intend to not let it happen again."
This is absurd. There is no need for a half-hearted apology to those who might have been offended (as if they'd accept it).
He meant what he said, which is, "If you add up, if you add up all the federal and you look at the disability and the unemployment and the Social Security and the state, my tax rate's 62, 63 percent. So I've got to make some decisions on what I'm going to do.
In other words, I think I'm getting hosed and I want to figure out how to fix that.
It sounds pretty terrible coming from the mouth of a guy who made an estimated $60 million last year, even though he only won one tournament. The idea that he's going to be unhappy taking home $23 million is offensive to many people. But, there are many people who agree with Mickelson. They think he's being taxed excessively and are on his side.
He should have stuck by his statement and explained it with more nuance this week at the PGA event in Torrey Pines.

C’mon. Phil doesn’t NEED $60M!!
(The gov’t NEEDS it for all the BS they have in mind!)
Okay, so ... Now it’s politically incorrect to say your taxes are too damn high?
He spends decades honing his craft so he can make good money only to give it to baby mommies (eventually to baby daddies) and he is suppose to say “thank you sir, may I have another”?
Please. Stand tall Phil and say whatever you want.
When did it become uncool to not like taxes????????
LOL. What a loser for apologizing. I’m tired of apologies from people who say honest things.....
Don’t be the average wussy Phil.
Obama’s making a list and checking it twice.
Here in NJ, we may as well simply send the $$ directly to Newark and Camden. Quicker and less red tape.
Phil is your typical California metrosexual. He likely voted for O and now he whines about his taxes. Then, knowing it goes against the grain of the insane mind of the liberal to complain about taxes, does an about face. Shut up and play golf.
What a f*g!!!! Clearly the only balls this guy has come in a box of twelve.
Be a man and own up to it you p*$$y!!!
Phil, just let Tiger win more and you’ll have less money to pay taxes on. Also, you might want to drop those cheesy commercials where you sell those drugs .... nobody really believes you.
Offended? How could any one be offended? They might disagree, but offended?
And so what if they are?
What a squish. If he wasn’t going to stand his ground, he should have kept it zipped. Now he will get it from both sides.
“...my [overall] tax rate’s 62, 63 percent...”
And it is chilling to think that some people think it’s okay to have to pay that much if you’re “rich.” It isn’t about how much one needs (though that is no one else’s darn business, either), it’s about the idea that *anyone* should have to give up nearly 2/3’s of what they earn in a year - basically 8 months out of 12 - to someone else. To me, that’s just plain obscene.
Didn’t we just have an election where all kinds of celebrities mouthed off on any issue they wanted and expected no criticism?

What is he apologizing for? I don’t get it.
Last minute ditch effort to try to be “politically correct”.
Don’t apologize. Complain louder.
