MILLER: National ‘assault weapon’ ban coming Thursday
The Washington Times ^ | 22 January, 2013 | Emily Miller

Posted on 01/23/2013 4:21:18 AM PST by marktwain

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office confirmed that she will be introducing in the Senate Thursday a new version of the so-called assault weapon ban. A spokesman said the full text will be released at a press conference on Thursday.

The California Democrat intends to expand on the ban that expired in 2004, by including handguns and shotguns, in addition to rifles. She would decrease from two to one the number of cosmetic features on a gun to have it be considered an “assault weapon.” This means that if a gun has just one item like a pistol grip or bayonet lug, then it is illegal. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law the same ban in New York last week.

Furthermore, instead of grandfathering in current firearms, she would create a national gun registry for the government to track lawful gun owners. Magazines would again be limited to 10 rounds.

The Clinton-era bill was not renewed by Congress after the Federal Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement agencies reported that it was ineffective in reducing crime.

President Obama said that a top priority is to get “an assault weapons ban that is meaningful” passed this year.

A summary of Mrs. Feinstein’s legislation is below.

Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of: 120 specifically-named firearms; certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one or more military characteristics; and semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds.

Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by: Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test; eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test; and banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans.

It’s why I bought my SKS during the Clinton years along with 500 rounds.

Us serious shooters have a term for 500 rounds - a good start.

Is a “bullet button” related to “the thing that goes up”??? I thought I was reasonably informed on firearms terminology but those two just escape me. Can somebody please translate?

A “bullet button” is a magazine release that uses the tip of a bullet (instead of your fingertip) to release the magazine. It gets around California’s ban on detachable magazines because it requires a “tool.”

I have seen an alternative that works differently, and will get around this ban.

That and horsies. Guess nobody showed hussein the pics of the specops guys on horseback in assghanistan in late 2001 and early 2002 huh? Of course they weren’t a sanctioned horse brigade so maybe that doesn’t count. What a buffoon. Sadly he’s got an AMEX black card that he let’s moosechelle antoinette use to buy wighats on our dime.

Molon labe.

Prepare to become a felon.

Senators in red states will not cooperate. It may get out of committee, but I doubt it will come up for a vote because it would not pass.

Only the safest blue state Democrats can ignore what’s going on out there: 250,000+ new members of the NRA, record sales of guns and ammo from coast to coast, major vendors pulling out of sports shows because of organizers’ bans on semi-automatics, an overload of phone lines and email boxes of Senators and Congressmen, the NRA and other 2nd Amendment advocacy groups threatening to support primary challengers to sitting politicians.

Obama and Dems have over reached and lost this one. He’ll issue a few EO’s to save face, but they will be nothing more than directives to better enforce existing laws.

Keep the pressure on the red state Senators.

The Bass Pro Shop near me (Great Lakes Crossing, Auburn Hills Michigan) normally has about 60 linear ft of handguns on display (3 shelves X 20 ft each). Saturday both bottom shelves were empty, and they had moved all the remaining pistols to the top shelf, which was also dwindling fast. There were about 30 people milling around the counter holding numbers, waiting their turn.

“They have been illegal in this country since 1934.”

Nope, not illegal just must have a special license to own one.

The ones carried by our current soldiers ARE illegal (being made after 1986). The ones made and registered before are merely so rare that they cost 10-20 times what they would in a free market.

This is MUCH more important than some stupid budget. After all, this will save lives. NOT! Are there enough “fema camps” to handle the millions of newly minted felons? Where the heck is William Wallace when you need him? The downward spiral continues. Don’t think it has the legs but I’ve been wrong before. My wife reminds me of that. A LOT! LOL!

Look for a reinstatement of the 1994 ban on mags and features.

Or just the $200 uber-background check on new ARs (treated like silencers under the NFA).

Yeah. My problem is ammo is almost four times as expensive at Wal Mart as it is on the internet, but I don’t want to buy off the web because I don’t want to be tracked. Maybe a gun show would be a good place. Somewhere where I can pay cash.

My buddy had a Bushmaster he bought for $650 last summer. Sold it in the parking lot of a local gun show in MI for $2k last week.

I was going to make him an offer, but for that kind of money I’ll stick with my mini-14 until the prices drop for now.

If Frankenfeinstein makes all 20 million or so AR-15's into the same class (registered with NFA, $200 transfer, fingerprints), how long will it take to transfer one of those?

Reread the summary, she bans all sales and transfers outright.

so it is essentially a taking without compensation.

taking the right of one’s remainder estate. (your property of estate)

taking the right of one’s transfer. (your property value in converting from one asset to another)

Not a complete quote, but would also require grandfathered weapons to be registered under the National Firearms Act,background ck of owner, type(of gun),serial #,photo and fingerprint and dedicated funding for the ATF to implement registration.

Yes, its a confiscation law. Initially, the date of confiscation is your death, but don’t worry, they have 5 years in mind.
