Before he was not allowed to buy a network (CBS?), Ted Turner was widely thought of as a conservative himself, at the time, many of us thought that was why he couldn’t make that purchase.

That's true. He was even interviewed at one point by The Review of the News, the weekly newsmagazine of the John Birch Society. Apparently he took a hard left for business reasons.

So he could buy AOL? Well, he sold his "conservative" soul mighty cheaply. (Cannot get over his naming his son after himself and calling him Teddy. Must have been thinking Roosevelt.)

That was definitely the view at the time, he just became a full blown lefty overnight, which managed to change him in the media's eye, from evil capitalist, media manipulating monster, to media hero, honest and responsible.
