FONTANA, Calif. – The school police force in this Southern California city has acquired 14 high-powered semiautomatic rifles for officers to bring to campuses.
Fontana Unified School District police purchased 14 of the Colt LE6940 rifles last fall, and they were delivered the first week of December, a week before a gunman killed 26 students and educators at a Connecticut elementary school.
"I think it just further solidified the need to give our officers the tools they need to respond to an active shooter on campus," schools Police Chief Billy Green said Wednesday about the tragedy.

This sounds, to me, like a government entity is admitting that there is a legitimate self-defense value provided by these types of weapons.

Precisely. If the 5.56 is "high-powered" then about every center-fire rifle is "high-powered".
The police should carry carbines (when they need them) that chamber use the same magazine as their pistol. That would give them increased accuracy, which is all they really need.
Most schools have cinderblock walls. 5.56 won't be any more effective at shooting through solid objects than their .40s. And pistol rounds pick up some velocity in a 16" barrel.
I take that these rifles are chambered in something other than 5.56mm?
High powered??? When I first read this, I thought maybe they were getting some SOCOM .458’s, .338 Lapua or Barrett M82 .50 cals!!!!Nah, puny little M4 wannabes in 5.56! The news media should be barred from reporting the news!

(Sarc on!)I’m guessing here but, since the LEOs are getting them they must be actually getting the dreaded “high power” version of the .223/5.56 round. Meanwhile we civilians are saddled with those crappy “low power” or “mediocre power” .223/5.56 ammo. Dang it, if the cops and troops have the “high power” ammo we should have it too. I’m really fed up with having to shoot targets less than 50 ft from the muzzle due to bullet drop with these lousy “low power” rds. (Sarc Off!)

Hi-Point still makes carbines chambered in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. According to their site, the .40 S&W model MSRP is only $315. And their carbines are all rated for +P ammunition.
Don’t like it. Those rifles will be unloaded and locked up in racks when needed. Schools need concealed handguns carried by people who, if not actually janitors or teachers or administrative people, are dressed and behave just like them. The next time some fruitcake tries to stroll into a school with a weapon the immediate response should be a lethal hail of bullets, not someone running off to alert security or to try to reach the means to stop him. Plus, I don’t like the idea of anything but pistol rounds being discharged in such crowded conditions.
Im willing to bet these weapons will be stolen before too long . . .
This should have been a well kept secret,,, like whats in my trunk.
