U.S. homeland chief: cyber 9/11 could happen "imminently"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned on Thursday that a major cyber attack is a looming threat and could have the same sort of impact as last year's Superstorm Sandy, which knocked out electricity in a large swathe of the Northeast.

Napolitano said a "cyber 9/11" could happen "imminently" and that critical infrastructure - including water, electricity and gas - was very vulnerable to such a strike.

A cyber security bill failed in Congress last year after business and privacy groups opposed it. The measure would have increased information-sharing between private companies and U.S. intelligence agencies and established voluntary standards for businesses that control power grids or water treatment plants.

Business groups said the legislation was government overreach. Privacy groups feared it might lead to Internet eavesdropping.

Imagine all the kids trying to add and subtract without a calculator. They’ll be having nervous breakdowns.

Seems to be the modus operandi on everything - yelling fire in a political theater.

1)As much as we all loathe her she is not wrong about this.

2)It’s been a known vulnerability for many years.

so....why has NOTHING been done about it???

So why don’t Big Dyke Sis and DHS do something proactive rather than issuing warnings about staying inside when it’s cold? GWB should have never established this joke bureaucracy.

Our national labs are under cyber attack from Eastern Europe, China, and North Korea every day.

They knocked out service to Sandia Labs for several hours last week.

No coverage at all. Just stick our fingers in our ears and go LA-LA-LA.

That way we can all be really surprised when we all oversleep one morning because the power grid and communication systems all crashed overnight.

this might be a good time to invest in citizen’s band and ham radio, and to also dust off and adapt your modem.

My bet is that in order to protect us from this crisis the government will need to assume control of the Internet and monitor all traffic and shut down potential “terrorist” sites like this one. The First Amendment is at much at risk with Emperor Obama as the Second Amendment. Obama’s takeover will be complete when talk radio is shutdown with a new “fairness doctrine”, Fox News is muzzled and Internet blog and news sites are censored.

I guess this means Homeland Security will need more power and money - and citizens will have to give up rights and privacy.

How strange 'the answer' is always the same: liberal elites must have more power and money and citizens must lose rights and privacy.

What was the question again?
