State Sen. Richard J. Codey would rather focus on his family-owned funeral business than run in November against Gov. Christie, the Essex County Democrat said Friday.

Despite weeks of speculation and a trip to Washington to woo big donors, Codey decided to scrap a campaign after his youngest son, Chris, said he would like to go into the family business and asked Codey to forgo the gubernatorial race. …

With less than nine months before the election, Democrats have yet to rally around a gubernatorial candidate. Christie, meanwhile, becomes ever more the juggernaut: The Republican has raised more than $2 million, and polls continue to show him far ahead of potential Democratic candidates. …

What would be the point? Jersey already has a Democrat governor... he’s just too much of a jerk to admit it.

If Booker thought twice about it, there’s no way Codey would be competitive either. Those are the only two available Democrats with true statewide recognition. I doubt Pallone would be stupid enough to waste his time.

Exactly. Why would a liberal run against a liberal incumbent?

You can be almost dead certain that the White House is going to ensure that no credible Democrat runs against Christie as a payoff for Christie’s late inning backstab of Romney.

Interesting ... because Codey was the likely candidate b/c he has name recognition. The Democrats must be worried about a bloodbath in November, so it's interesting if their best candidate won't run.

From the FDU Poll: "Forty-five percent of Democrats would support Senator Codey in a head-to-head with Governor Christie, 35 percent would support Senator Buono, and a third (33%) would support Senator Sweeney."
