China began test flights Saturday for the prototype of its first indigenously-developed heavy transport aircraft, Y-20, a craft similar in size to the Russian IL-76 and somewhat smaller than the U.S. C-17.

The plane took off at around 2:00pm from an airport in Yanliang, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, according to CCTV News.

The Y-20 program is part of an effort to develop an indigenous long-range jet-powered heavy transport aircraft, a top priority in China's "Medium- and Long-Term National Science and Technology Development Program (2006-20)" (MLP).

Y-20 is developed by Xian Aircraft Industry, a subsidiary of Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country's leading military aircraft maker.

Earlier reports said it's able to accommodate most large PLA combat and support vehicles, including the Type 99 series tanks, with a capacity to carry up to 66 tons of goods.

Not a lot of ways to design a high wing cargo aircraft. the C-20 doesn’t have a T-tail, so it isn’t a direct copy of the C-17,

How much of it is alloy vs carbon? The C-17 has carbon wings.

The graphic on the Free Republic article page is probably an early design concept for the aircraft. The 12 photos at the Crienglish article definitely show a “T” tailed cargo aircraft that looks a lot like a C-17 without turbofan engines. (Sort of a C-17/Il-76 blend).

Hopefully the Chinese take the time to thank us and our traitorous companies for walking them through the design process.

I just hate being taken for granted.

The IL-76 was almost a direct copy of Lockheed's C-141 (now retired by the Air Force). In fact, Russia stole the Lockheed blueprints.

Many people still refer to the IL-76 as the "C-141-ski."

C-17 still has alum wings, but years ago it did switch to a carbon horizontal tail.

Peruse the publication “Major Jordan's Diary”, it details the wholesale transfer of our technology to the Soviet Union.

I remember what a big controversy there was prior to mass production, when the carbon fiber wings were being tested. I lived near Charleston AFB, and anything concerning C-17s was always big news. I specifically remember the carbon fiber wings had trouble with some static load tests. At the time, the plane was being touted as containing more carbon fiber than any other aircraft to date. That is my memory....
