My son played competitive soccer through high school and college. There are just as many concussions and injuries on the soccer field with a lot less padding and protective gear. Soccer at the competitive level is a contact sport.

Nobody in Europe ever knew soccer as the beautiful game before that absurd ad campaign that tried to push it on Yanks. Everyone knew it as the foreign game, even some in the country where it originated. (Rugby is still rugby though.)
