There is an old quote from Hitler or some another Nazi that fits here. The quote is probably apocryphal, but it contains an essence should be attended to. I capture it loosely here: "If the Jew did not exist, we would have had to invent him."

The meaning should be clear: a leader can rally people to his side if he can show them a vile, evil, lurking menace which is within their society, and which must be eradicated -- and which can be eradicated, if the society is led by the right man.

Obama tried this with Limbaugh during the early stages of the Birth Certificate/Documents controversy. Limbaugh was convinced that Rahm and Barky had a play on, that relied on Rush or Beck or Levin or someone going public with the BC altercation and one of the fake BC's people were sending Orly Taitz.

Limbaugh referred to a couple of public statements Obama made that were cryptic references to the documents drama and seemed to invite Rush out for a crushing. He didn't rise to the bait.
