Michel Sapin made the gaffe in a radio interview, which left French President Francois Hollande battling to undo the potential reputational damage.

“There is a state but it is a totally bankrupt state,” Mr Sapin said. “That is why we had to put a deficit reduction plan in place, and nothing should make us turn away from that objective.”

The comments came as President Hollande attempts to improve the image of the French economy after pledging to reduce the country’s deficit by cutting spending by €60bn (£51.5bn) over the next five years and increasing taxes by €20bn.

for the past 20 years, I’ve been told by liberals how the European system is such an ideal way for USA to go. Should be interesting to see it all unravel now.

The Marshall Plan was wasted on Europe. It made them fat and lazy and socialistic.

Even today the US takes care, for a large part, of Europe’s defenses.

Excellent post. I never quite thought of the Marshall Plan as as an enabler of bad habits, but your perspective certainly has validity. Had Europe been forced to recover on its own maybe the continent wouldn’t be the socialist failure it is today.

Earth to Jerry Brown.

Jerry Brown, this is the Planet Earth. Please read the following...
