I’ve been surprised, myself, by the tumbleweeds rolling across the prairies of lefty antiwar protesters on the issue of drone strikes. Okay, so I’ve heard Ralph Nader go after Obama, and grumbles here and there. They don’t like it when libs inevitably act like what they think only Pubs act like as commander in chief. But somehow he’s not an insane, criminal, bloodthirsty, nazi vampire like Bush.
Remember what a big deal assassination was back in the Carter years? How the CIAs humbling stupidity in multiple attempts on Castro’s life, and such, embarrassed us further, if that was possible in the post-Vietnam hangover. Isn’t it still illegal? I don’t remember Congress ever reversing itself, nor SCOTUS giving a green light. But here we are; Obama may dispatch robots to blow people up at whim. American citizens, even, and doesn’t have to worry about international law, due process, or anything like that. The courts don’t have to let in on whatever cause it is the White House claims to have. It’s all, “Trust us, we had good reason. Can’t tell you about. You know, executive privilege. Bye-bye, now.”
Which is new, somewhat, in that such precise strikes weren’t so matter of course before. But the general thrust is completely in line with the secrecy if and deference to the executive branch of the National Security State since Truman. It’s just strange to see libs so mum.
