“Gomer Pyle, USMC” star Jim Nabors married his longtime male partner at Seattle’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel earlier this month, according to Hawaii News Now.
Nabors, a Hawaii resident, had never publicly come out. But his relationship with Stan Cadwallader wasn’t a secret before they decided to take advantage of Washington’s new same-sex marriage law, he told the news station.
“I’m 82, and he’s in his 60s, and so we’ve been together for 38 years, and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” Nabors he told the station.

When the word came out, the Indy 500 feared a backlash from 400,000 drunken redneck racing fans and asked Nabors to step aside for the opening ceremonies. The reaction of 400,000 druken redneck racing fans, however, was to set up a chant of "we want Gomer." Vox populi, big time. Nabors was back the next year.
I have not been back to the race for more than 10 years, as kids and changing responsibilities mean I don't get to Indiana as much. I understand that Nabors was ailing this year and that they used a recording of him singing Back Home Again. He is an institution. He has, or had when he was younger, a wonderful singing voice, and he owns that song.
