Canadian troops drawn into Mali’s war, despite what Prime Minister Stephen Harper says: Walkom

...

The Star’s report Tuesday came from anonymous sources in the Defence Department. The CBC had to find out from French television that Canadian special forces are also operating in Niger, which borders on Mali.

But then everything about Canada’s role in Mali is treated by Ottawa as a state secret. Canadians learned of the initial C-17 deployment only after Mali’s president tweeted the information on the internet.

When that initial, one-week deployment was extended, we were first told not by our own government but by Mali’s ambassador to Canada.

...

Meanwhile, who exactly are we fighting in Mali? The usual government line is that the rebels are Islamic militants set on turning Mali into a terrorist base. But as reports from the ground demonstrate, the reality is far more complicated.

There are at least four different armed rebel groups operating in the country’s north. The National Movement for the Liberation of Azwad, a Tuareg separatist group, claims it holds the town of Kidal. It used to be allied with the Islamist Ansar Dine.

Now, according to AP, the separatists say they want to work with the French against some (but not all) Islamists. But they say they will still fight Mali’s army which, according to reports from Reuters, is said to be busy executing those who look Tuareg in towns liberated by the French.

Canadian Special Forces (Maybe JTF2) are in Mali protecting the Canadian Embassy (unlike Benghazi).

There have been other reports of JTF-2 in Mali. I guess they flew in on the C-17.

Embassy protection is a good role for these guys. I don't really want to see them in combat in Mali. What for? This is France's show, let them handle it.

Another question is: Why does Canada have an embassy in Mali? To honor the Francophonie?

If Canadian special forces are in Mali, don't you think US special forces are also in country? I do.

Canadians allow women in combat, so have any women made into their special forces?

Given the current state of things I'm not sure what African country we don't have special forces in. We've admitted to having them in Uganda, South Sudan, Niger, CAR, Nigeria, Egypt, Libya and Djibouti. If they aren't already in Mali the question would have to be "why not?"

Which raises an interesting point. Here is a Western nation using troops to protect its Ambassador. Will the State Department sit up and take notice?

No we don’t, even in my old battalion of 2ppcli we had one and she was carried to get there. I tried out for jtf 2 in 03 and was accepted, but then I got married. No women I know will never make it into that considering most men can’t.

Sorry, the adults are in charge in Canada.

Your current administration is not too fond of Canada. A posperous, predominately white country run by conservatives. Obama is having none of that.

Also, a picture tells a thousand words:

This photo was probably taken after another lecture from the economist to the communist, I'll let you decide who is who.

Compare and contrast with one of my favorite Harper photos:

The Jew haters in Canada don't like Harper much either. Wonder why?

Rest of the world is having it’s “Oh, Crap!” moment of waking up and realizing that Obama is serious about no longer fighting the Islamists for them.

However he doesn't seem to have an aversion to killing Muslims. I think the biggest problem is we don't know whose side he's on, we just know it's not ours. I'm fairly confident that his policies shift based on which handler has the most influence on a given day; like all the rumors that the only reason he killed bin Laden was someone got around Valerie Jarrett.
