MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) The mayor of Minneapolis wants to reduce gun violence in the city and hes taking a new approach.
During Wednesdays city council meeting Mayor R.T. Rybak said hes going to closely examine where the city purchases its guns and ammunition.
We buy a lot of guns and ammunition, we should really question whether the companies that we are buying from are going to Washington and are working with us or fighting against us, he said.
Rybak says he wants to begin a constructive dialogue with companies they buy from and see if they would like to be partners with the city in reducing gun violence in the community.
We believe thats a value they should share, the mayor said.
Since 2008, Minneapolis has spent $593,000 on ammunition and $193,000 on guns. The handguns primarily purchased are Smith and Wesson M&P. The shotguns purchased are Remington 870s.
If Minneapolis Police officers purchase their own guns, they receive a stipend of around $800 a year.
Ammunition is where most of the money is spent, and its purchased from two local companies: Streichers Police Equipment in Plymouth and Federal Cartridge Company in Anoka.
We do restrict our sales to only approved personnel, such as law enforcement, military or public safety personnel, said a Striechers employee and wanted to remain anonymous.
Rybak is not the only mayor taking this approach on gun safety. He says 60 other Democrat mayors across the county are doing the same.
Weve been asked by the people of Minneapolis to make this a safer city, Rybak said. I dont believe the city of Minneapolis would like their dollars to be sent to companies that are fighting with us on that.
Minneapolis Deputy Chief Travis Glampe says that at this point hes eager to hear what the companies are going to say.
Weve been dealing with these companies for a long time, Glampe said.
WCCO Radio also placed a phone call to Federal Cartridge in Anoka. They have yet to return the call.
Oh please, what a load of “you are little people” bs!
Here is the “We do restrict our sales to only approved personnel, such as law enforcement, military or public safety personnel, said a Striechers employee” website.
It is not “restricted” to a damn thing.
IF there was an actual “Striechers employee” that said they restrict their sales to “approved personnel” they are either butt kissing the Mayor’s overinflated ego or they are asking for ID on VERY specific individual items.
Judging from the “the companies that we are buying from are going to Washington and are working with us” remark, I am sure this guy is a full blown communist agenda donk.

That pales in comparison to the boycott that would immediately take effect if any gun maker chooses sides with a city.
What they could do is to have a policy of NO SALES whatsoever to police or government agencies. What they should do is LEASE the guns to these entities. This puts them in the drivers seat completely. They could sell this approach by providing trade in/trade up terms for the agencies so that when a new caliber or model is introduced they agency can simply off lease the current model and replace with the new models, for a certain price of course. This gives the agency the flexibility to not be tied to a particular caliber or configuration. Second the manufactures could offer service and maintenance contracts for these leases. This means constant cash flow for the manufacturer
The beauty of this plan is the government entities would never OWN these weapons and the leases would terminate in certain time intervals. This also provides a constant income stream for the manufacturers. However when the going gets tough, the manufacturers still OWN the weapons and thus set the terms of the lease.
If Ronnie Barrett had used this approach he could have told California law enforcement that not only will he no longer do business with them but when the lease is up they must return his guns. Or better yet have a clause in the lease whereby it could be terminated by either party.
This is the ONLY way I would ever do business with the government if I were a manufacturer. If they don't like it, then they could go get their guns from somewhere else.
So they’re going to buy their guns and ammo from suppliers that don’t make or supply guns or ammo? Lemme know how that works out.
Ronnie Barrett can't get is .50 caliber rifles back from California, but the police departments with them cannot buy spare parts or training or service. When one of these big bores goes down for a broken firing pin or extractor (or whatever), the department armorer can't fix the rifle if he has no spare parts.
I just tweeted his sorry ass.
We buy a lot of guns and ammunition, we should really question whether the companies that we are buying from are going to Washington and are working with us or fighting against us, he said
This Mayor is living proof that you can’t fix stupid!
None of them are going to Washington and backing Obama’s gun grab you moron............
FU!!!!
My idea????? They stop selling to fascist gobmints and refuse repairs to the same, in an effort to reduce them to their appropriate position of begging or being subsummed to the citizenry.
Notice that they don’t buy anything from businesses inside of Minneapolis. The Dems ran every gun & ammo shop out years ago. How’s that workin’ for ya, Rybutt?
