N.Korea 'Poised to Conduct Nuclear Test'

North Korea appears to have completed preparations for a nuclear test with the installation of measuring equipment near the entrance of an underground test site in Pungye-ri, North Hamgyong Province, a senior government official here said Thursday.

South Korea and the U.S. are considering military steps in addition to diplomatic pressure and economic sanctions if the North goes ahead with the test.

President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency meeting with diplomatic and security officials on Thursday morning to discuss Seoul's options. In a statement issued after the meeting, the government said, "If North Korea pushes ahead with another provocation by misjudging the situation, it must be warned that serious consequences will follow."

A government official said, "We believe North Korea could conduct a nuclear test as early as tomorrow if it wants to, so we are closely monitoring the situation."

Meanwhile, the U.S. dispatched a reconnaissance plane with highly sensitive detection equipment to Okinawa, the New York Times reported Thursday. It "may be able to answer the question of whether the North has moved to a new generation of homemade uranium weapons," the daily added.

People keep wondering what kind of military steps both SK and US can take. It won't be likely that they are doing air-strike on key nuclear installation.

Introducing tactial nuke to S. Korea again?

I must say my progressive, far sighted Foreign Policy just keeps on giving dividend... after dividend!

Yeah, just like... my progressive, far sighted Foreign Policy!

Gadzooks! Certainly Neville Chamberlain... was the First Black King of England?

No, Bend, I was the First Black King of England... and stop calling me 'Shirley!'

In and out of itself, it lost its value as an indicator of something really serious, because they used to do it and it turned out to be not so serious, to outsiders, anyway. However, other things are at place now, such as concrete physical indication of the impending test. So this martial law thing contain some beef this time around.

What an opportunity to lob a 20 - 40 megaton trident missile right smack on top of their nuclear test facility at zero hour. There will be few N. Koreans left, but those that are, will think that their test was a success beyond their wildest dreams(nightmares).

There is a control post near the site where NK engineers will monitor the entire test. I won’t be too comfortable if I am in that building, not because the Fat Boy will purge him if the test goes south, but because the building could be mysteriously blown up.:-)
