The Mexicans I work with, and I work with a lot of them, refer to Americans like me as “white people”. And they call themselves “brownies”.
Now you may labor under the impression that they regard themselves as Caucasians, but they don’t.

They see themselves as a race that is distinct from whites. They are descended from Aztecs and Mayans and other Indian tribes south of the border. But what would they know compared to you? They’re Mexicans after all.
