Underground dentist not remorseful about illegal practice

PLANO, Texas—Inside the unassuming ranch-style house, investigators discovered things like an x-ray machine, grinders, syringes, surgical instruments and anesthetics.

Police say the homeowner, 63-year-old Jose Santiago Delao, had been running an underground dental clinic in the aging suburban Dallas neighborhood for years: pulling teeth and filling cavities, among other procedures.

As shocking as this sounds, Delao's case is not that unusual. And it offers insight into a world of backyard dentistry that caters to those in the country illegally, the uninsured and others who can’t find affordable dental care.

Delao admits he skirted the law, but isn’t remorseful. “Jesus Christ didn’t need or didn’t have a license,” Jose Delao told Yahoo News during a jailhouse interview. “People hurt and they needed it. People didn’t have enough money to visit the regular dentist.”

Delao, who says he is a trained dental lab technician, says he couldn’t turn his back.

“It broke my heart,” he said, tapping his chest, “because I have the experience.”

But authorities say Delao, a native of Costa Rica, has never been a licensed dentist in Texas. If convicted, he could get two to 10 years in prison.

So we have an unlicensed dentist offering services to illegals. What is a good PC-Statist to do? On the one hand, he is catering to illegals, who now have what amounts to a priviledged status in this country -- they can do things without going through the same procedures everyone else has to do. On the other hand, any good statist would cruxify someone who tried to operate a business without a state license.

Ha! Knew two brothers, one with dental license the other not. B worked for A, assisted. Then they had a fight and B left, taking A’s tools with him. B opened up a dental office of his own, had many happy patients (as his technique was far smoother than his brother’s). After awhile, A finked to the cops and B wound up in gaol (”practicing without a license”).
When B was checked into the clink, the warden greeted him with: “Hey, you’re the guy who was practicing dentistry! We need a dentist here, would you be willing to serve as our (Big) House dentist while you’re staying with us?”

We'll be seeing much more of this if Ow-bama-Care comes to pass. Not only dentists but pretty much every other procedure you can think of.

I also wouldn't be surprised if we see licensed doctors “retiring” and doing work under the table to avoid malpractice and government mandates.

How’d they find him — because of all the drilling?

I wonder the value of being a licensed veterinarian. A person can practice with impunity in Mississippi and Tennessee without a license. They don't have to pay license fees, “privilege” taxes for professionals, city taxes, AVMA and Malpractice insurance, and many more things that I can't enumerate. A person can buy all the drugs they need to practice without a DEA license from the feed stores and Internet. eBay sells all of the surgical tools a person will need. MD’s and Dentists have a monopoly and have little competition from quacks comparatively speaking. Punishment for being caught for practicing veterinary medicine without a license? $50 and a misdemeanor.

Business usually came word of mouth, but news of Delao’s arrest didn’t travel fast enough to stop people from showing up after he was jailed. His neighbor posted a sign on her door, “Aqui No Vive Dentista” (dentist doesn’t live here). “I have a problem with people banging on the door morning, noon and night,” Francisca Ramos said this week.
