Jen Maksel knows she's one of the lucky ones. Her 7-year-old son, Bryce, escaped last Friday's carnage by fleeing hero teacher Vicki Soto's classroom when the gunman looked away.
Last Friday morning Maksel, 42, was just drifting off to sleep after working an overnight shift then putting her kids on the bus when her phones began ringing off the hook. Before she could answer them, a neighbor began pounding on her front door yelling, "There's a school shooting at Sandy Hook!"
She jumped in her car and headed to the school.
"I parked on the side of the road and just ran to the firehouse," she says. "Most of it is a blur because I was in total panic trying to find Bryce. Bryce's friends' mothers were there, too, doing the same thing. It was total chaos. I was crying hysterically."
Her ex-husband, Steve, was there as well. They spent a harrowing three hours at the Sandy Hook firehouse waiting for word about their son's fate.
"They were lining the surviving kids up by class," says Jen, a respiratory therapist who lives in Sandy Hook. "In Bryce's class all I saw were five kids. I couldn't stop crying because Bryce wasn't one of them."
Not long afterward another mom told Jen that five kids who'd escaped were at the Newtown police station. "She said two moms found them running down the road a half mile from the school," Jen says. "She didn't know which kids they were, though."
Jen immediately called the Newtown police who told her, "We have [your son]," she recalls. "I almost passed out."
"He said [of gunman Adam Lanza], 'He looked at all of us, then he turned around toward our teacher and all five of us ran,'

5 kids from Ms Soto's classroom were at the fire house and 5 of them were at the police station.
First I’ve head of this
Schools determined after Columbine that schools should be locked down when there is a threat. The plan is to keep students in place, I have never agreed with that idea. My daughters were in high school when lock down became the plan to deal with shooters, I told them if at all possible, escape, run, evade and don’t stop until well clear of the area. I just don’t see how making students sitting ducks is a good plan. I know there are many different scenarios and no one answer will fit all. Seems even though these were much younger students they decided to escape and evade and it worked out for them.
later
Apparently the Hartford Courant has been insisting that 7 of her students were found by police in her cabinets, but then why aren't there 7 kids at the fire house where all the kids were evacuated to?? Why just 5.
It appears that the Courant story is not true. All the kids ran and that is what saved their lives. It sounds like they ran in two groups -- one a few seconds behind the other.
Here is Gene Rosen practicing his lines for the play. Perhaps we might use this to figure out what happened to the imaginary children? Was it in the lounge with a candlestick? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFyexz_IuHE
We just did. The Courant imagined 7 of them coming out of the cabinets in Soto's classroom when police got there. When asked about that story Lt Vance said that it did not come from anyone involved with the investigation.
True. Remember how all the "professional" emergency 911 operators told the World Trade Center occupants to STAY WHERE YOU ARE UNTIL HELP ARRIVES. They killed a lot of occupants and rescuers that way...
I would like to remind everyone that this paper has a connection to Sandy Hook. One of the reporters is the step-father of a slain teacher.
While ya'll figure out the case of the missing cabinet children, which seems to be more of a math problem, I'm curious as to Maksel's occupation. She works at night and has many phones wherever she was drifting off. How many phones with different numbers does she have? Do people still use phones with hooks?
Also, the mother of a slain teacher is a copy editor at the Danbury News-Times,
She’s a respiratory therapist who’s probably using an old figger of speech.
The standard school-lockdown plan is intended to minimize chaos so police arriving on the scene don’t shoot the wrong people.
They used to tell rape victims to not resist (so the criminal would injure you less). Before 9/11, plane passengers were passive.
The Government wants us to be passive. If we won’t act to save our own lives, well then tyrants have nothing to fear.
That does make sense, but my girls would have been long gone from the scene before police arrived, especially where they went to school- LEO response time was 30 minutes to one hour. Before Columbine several adults working at their school were armed, after schools became a free fire...ah I mean gun free zone I hope the adults were still armed but of course they would not have admitted it.

Yes.
And yet we have to go to People Magazine to find out that while 5 kids from Soto's class were at the fire station, 5 others were at the police station.
They do tell you there were Survivors in Soto’s classrom
