In this I-Team report, Chicago's rising murder rate in a new context, how the numbers of shooting deaths compare to the city's most notorious crime era, the one that has tarnished Chicago's reputation around the world for a century.

The surprising stats show the city is worse off now in the category of murder than at the height of the era that has driven Chicago's reputation for almost a century, Capone's "gangland" Chicago.

Let's compare two months: January 1929, leading up to the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and last month, January 2013. Forty-two people were killed in Chicago last month, the most in January since 2002, and far worse than the city's most notorious crime era at the end of the Roaring Twenties. January 1929 there were 26 killings.

If you were on a hit for Al Capone and you accidentally killed some innocent bystander or a two year old kid, you would be wearing cement shoes when he took you out on his boat for a swim in Lake Michigan.

Instead of “The Night Chicago Died...” the song could be revised to “Every Night Chicago Dies...”

I've been watching A&E's Thursday night program "The First 48" for several years now. Part of the series now focuses on missing people in the City of Chicago. According to the opening segment of the program each week, every 30 minutes a person goes missing in Chicago.

The last two episodes I've watched have featured two different women reported missing, and both women have mental problems that require them to take medication regularly. And in both cases, these women stopped taking their meds, began acting out, and went missing.

Having worked in Corrections for 25 years, I am all too familiar with the mentally ill behind bars. I'm also familiar with NY State's history of closing psych centers, and putting people on the street. I imagine it's that way in other states as well. The police eventually locate these missing people, take them to the hospital for treatment, then they're released back into the community to once more stop taking their meds, and the vicious cycle goes on and on.

What really gets my goat is that the police, in this case the Chicago police, spend many man-hours trying to track down these missing mentally ill people, when they should be focusing on bigger problems. This is just Chicago, and I'm sure it's happening in all of the big cities across the country.

Actually not true. There was a lot of corrollary damage in the gang wars, especially the bombings.

Al was one hell of a Community Organizer. Very few people got shot under his tenure who didn’t need it.

I looked up the Chicago population, in 1930 it was 3,376,438. The Census bureau released the 2010 population figures July 7th 2011 and reported Chicago’s population at 2,707,120. The numbers of murders per 100,000 have apparently skyrocketed in the liberals “gun free” city. Apparently the federal firearms act of 1934 and the combined firearm “control” laws of Chicago, Cook County, the State of Illinois and the Federal government have greatly contributed to the “gun violence” and loss of “innocent” and not so innocent life. Citizens were much safer when they could order by mail and receive a Thompson fully automatic 45 cal. machinegun.

Will Obama be seeking peace agreements with Chicago gangs?

Three-quarters of those killed now have arrest records in the last period they released info on the subject—so in some ways things haven’t changed much. Keeping one’s nose clean greatly improves life expectancy.

There was a comment made at the townhall meeting yesterday
referring to the impending concealed carry ruling that they didn’t want it to become the “wild west”, I began to wonder if any period of the wild west was ever this deadly.

The Nazi’s in the White House removed the bust and are using a photo for propaganda purposes. The original photo of Winston Churchill with cigar and machine gun was suppressed by the press, acquired by the enemy, and dropped in leaflets over London. Thousands of copies of this photo, bearing the caption ‘Wanted for Incitement to Murder,’ were dropped over London in an attempt to portray Churchill in a negative light. Al Capone would be proud.
