According to a friend of mine who lived the first 25 years of his life in Russia, the Bolsheviks murdered 30 million people in the first five years of the Leninist regime. Kulaks, Mensheviks, faith communities, including observant Jews.
In one Ukranian town, Soviet soldiers lined up confessing Christians and their whole families on the side of a road and shot them all. Hundreds of them. men, women, and children. The surviving townspeople were told not to bury the bodies but to leave them there as a warning to those who would dare to confess Christ.
To this day, when you visit that town, you can see bits of bone and fragments of clothing there at the execution site. The people decided never to bury them so they would never forget the predations of communism.
