A 5-year-old boy held captive for seven days in an underground bunker in southern Alabama is alive and his kidnapper is dead, a law enforcement official told NBC News on Monday afternoon.
Jimmy Lee Dykes, a 65-year-old man described by his neighbors as a paranoid survivalist, grabbed the boy from a school bus last Tuesday afternoon.

Thank you Lord God.
Now we are going to have to register our bunkers or anything that can be used as a bunker such as root cellars and tornado shelters. Just you wait. You read it here first on FR!
So glad it ended well. Poor little boy. Hope he recovers from this trauma.
They dug beside it, blew a hole open with a charge, and shot him.
So glad the FBI successfully saved this child. Unlike other children...
I agree, thank you Lord Jesus!
I agree, thank you Lord Jesus!
Kindergartner, old armed white man, veteran, survivalist and even a bunker to boot.
I could see it now. “All inhabitable dwellings must be registered and have access for law enforcement”
Praise God.
"PTSD veteran"
"gun-loving prepper"
"home-schooled loner"
Media talking points made on behalf of the "gun grabbing" regime. They are one the same.
What if he voted Democrat?
Even if your crazy paranoid as squirrely as a junk yard rat...
that don’t mean some people are NOT OUT to “git you”...
Obviously those that vote for Barry Half-White.. are completely insane..
What amounts to being “nuts” these days MUST be gauged on a sliding scale..
Thanks for this info....quite the rescue!
The last census took care of that for you.
“What if he voted Democrat?”
He will now.
Sad but true.
And people claim CNN and MSNBC are better news sources. MALE BOVINE EXCREMENT!!!
Thank God for the LE people who used common sense to bring this situation to a wonderful end. Prayers for Ethen the boy and his family. They face a hard road now.
Thank you God, FBI and the local police.
Why is a state official doling out personal medical information on the boy... That is in violation of his privacy rights... or did those go out with the 2nd....
“I could see it now. All inhabitable dwellings must be registered and have access for law enforcement”
They already do, its called a building permit.
Does that also apply on county property?
That bus driver is a hero. Thank God it ended up with the bad guy dead and the good kid alive.
Thank God.
Depends on the county but generally yes. They want drawings, inspections and taxes for everything.
Suicide by FBI bullets? Appeared that the old man didn’t want to waste his remaining years away rotting in a jail cell.
I suspect they used a “low explosive” for the hole. Unlike high explosive, that would shatter the wall and send the pieces flying inward, low explosives “push” a hole through the wall.
When every second counts, the po-po are only a week away.
Lord God, we thank You for rescuing this child and for answering our prayers. May Your Name be praised!

Amen.
.... I find it very curious that we have known the perps identity for almost 7 days but the Communist Socialist Propaganda Machine has been suspiciously silent about Jim Dykes background. All that was revealed about him is that he was “Anti Government.” Normally we would have known every single detail about the perpetrators life by now.
Well he was coming arounfd
That is truly brilliant!
good one
Most probably because he was able to see/hear the news and if they reported something he didn’t like, he could have harmed the little boy. They may have kept silent because of him.
I am still outraged it took a full week to rescue the boy. They could have found some way to ‘sedate’ via gas or do some other high tech rescue. He could have been a pedophile or been torturing the young boy.
There is a major problem with gas when a child is present. The effective dose for an adult is probably fatal to a child.
This was a unique situation that presented a very difficult tactical situation. If leaked information and official statements are correct it did not appear that he had harmed the child so the best answer was to continue to wait things out refining the tactical plan for an immediate response or planned assault. I was happy with the results and pray for the well-being of the child and family.
“Thank God for the LE people who used common sense to bring this situation to a wonderful end.”
I disagree.
I watched some of the coverage that was on Fox News, towards the end.
What I saw was shocking — or it should be to any freedom-loving American.
The place was swarming with FBI and I saw troops in camouflage. Couldn’t tell if they were military or FBI and/or police in military garb.
All for one man holding one hostage.
This should never have progressed beyond local police with help from the state police.
I thought Alabama was supposed to be a conservative state. A truly conservative governor, especially in these times, should have told the feds to butt out.
We are seeing the future in incidents like this — and that future looks scary indeed.
A thought came to me recently. Of course, we have something called Posse Comitatus that is supposed to prevent the military from being used to police American citizens and enforce state laws on American soil.
But the Posse Comitatus law does nothing to address the use of [supposedly non-military] federal “agents” who have become increasingly militarized in behavior, equipment, and tactics. It does nothing to address the use of local and state police, also “miitarized” into SWAT teams or even in outright military garb.
Since the government cannot use our own “military” against us as such, they are transforming the police into nothing less than a quasi-military force.
This incident was a good illustration of that transformation.
I’m glad the boy was rescued and that the perp is no longer a threat to anyone.
But this weren’t a wonderful ending. It was a portent of things to come .
I realize your opinion may be different. But that’s how I see it .
Incorrect. Local and State asked for assistance. Very unique situation. Needed to save the boy and figure out how to survey the bunker. Local or state funds did not have this tech.
Bottom Line.. Boy is alive
Very good point. Also, whatever “message” he had for why he did this will be forever buried too. Winners write the history books. Whatever upset him, he sure didn’t handle it very well.
First kidnapping has been a federal crime for many years. That is why the FBI was there. It was their job.
Second your point about the military does raise a point. However did you stop to think about the media circus this event became. I can gaurantee there were hundreds, if not thousands, of media personnel involved in this. That creates traffic jams, crowd congestion, and general chaos. Remember this was a small community with little manpower. I would think it was simply overwhelmed in trying to handle the logistics of the situation. So I have to assume they asked for help from the state level and the Governor assigned some National Guard troops to help with crowd management.
While you see a portent of military control in this I would think it is simply one of handling a crowd with available resources. No big conspiracy.
That said I do agree in some part with your concern about militarization of the police in the future. But in my mind this incident was not a part of that.
—Very good point. Also, whatever message he had for why he did this will be forever buried too. Winners write the history books. Whatever upset him, he sure didnt handle it very well.—
I don’t want to hear a “message” from a guy that killed a bus driver and kidnapped a 5 year old.
—Local or state funds did not have this tech.—
Nor do they have the training. And I’m sure if they were to get training, people would be screaming about how they are preparing to attack citizens in their bunker.
Who was home-schooled? I’m just wondering as a home-schooler myself.
thanks
You know, you're exactly right. Absolutely no argument. I also do not want to hear ANY "message" from the government anymore about anything when they support welfare fraud, illegal immigration, pro-abortion, shipping arms to criminals, gay rights in "...every institution and all walks of life." and forced choices on healthcare which will cause me and my family severe financial duress while leaving us with very little healthcare. The government spends millions in foreign countries on God-knows-what while refusing to fund worthwhile projects here including armed guards in schools.
The government has killed and is going to kill far more people through its policies than Jimmy Lee Dykes in his insanity did. You are exactly right on target about not wanting to hear any message from someone with whom you so vehemently disagree both through violation of governmental and moral law. I applaud you.
P.S. I've been getting my "message" out for YEARS in this forum. The pen IS mightier than the sword.
We aren’t talking about govn’t. I was referring to YOU saying about the kidnappers message. I responded in kind. I was not talking about a government message. In this instance, they did their job and they did it well. If you want to go off about govn’t message then I will address that. But you only mentioned the kidnappers message. I responded.
We? I in a round about way, most certainly was. Yes, the government did its job. However, I and others do not like what the government is doing at the present. However you want to address that, go right ahead. I'll try to stay up with you.
In a “round about way”? Of course. How stupid of me. No one likes what the government is doing. You stated about what the guy wanted to “get out”. I said I don’t care to hear what he has to say. You then equated that meaning that I am ok with government. I am not, stop assuming I am.
