NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Senate Finance Committee has advanced a proposed constitutional amendment to explicitly ban a state income tax to a full floor vote.

The panel voted 9-1 on Tuesday to advance the measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Brian Kelsey of Germantown that would also ban a state or local payroll tax.

Good, TIE their hands, such that they are limited to legitimate Gov’t functions.

Time for Doug Henry to go. He is an Old Blue Dog, emphasis on Old, but he got pushed to the left in the last primary.

In some ways I hate to see him go; I've met him before, had a drink in his house, and he was the last Democrat I ever voted for. He was also consistently pro-life. His replacement will doubtless be full bore leftist, gay agenda, etc. Unfortunately, Nashville is a blue island in a (delightful) red sea.

I'll be moving to Franklin soon...

Opponents argue the measure is unnecessary amid solid opposition to an income tax among Republican lawmakers who already hold supermajorities in both the House and Senate.

Wrong!! You make hay while the sun shines and it's shining now. Even having pubbie majorities doesn't guarantee no income tax; just look at disgraced RINO Sundquist who pushed harder for onw than and DemonRat. Remember, "what goes around, comes around."

It’s a meaningless and unnecessary proposal FOR RIGHT NOW, but it will keep future Republicans from straying. It’s locking in conservatism. Love it.

I remember when thousands of cars circled the Capital building honking their horns to protest a possible income tax.

One legislator on a radio program at the time said he had received death threats if he voted for an income tax; he was reminded by a caller that if income tax passed, he would be sending people with guns out to collect the tax; so taking him out would just be a pre-emptive strike.
