Washington (CNN) -- As President Obama continues to push for new gun control measures, new FBI data shows that January was the second-highest month on record for gun background checks. FBI figures posted Tuesday show there were 2,495,400 background checks done through the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, known as NICS. The number was more than 1 million higher than any previous January. Also in January, 8,980 of the background checks resulted in gun purchase denials. U.S. law requires background checks for all people who try to buy firearms from federally licensed dealers.

What’s that? Something less than 1/2 of 1 percent?

I bought two, did my job.
I am going to wait a few months as I do not want to wait for 6 hours.....current wait time.

Well people do have to sleep sometime.
I went into a Cabellas (Kansas City) a few weeks ago to make a purchase...I got there after five oclock and thought it wouldn’t be as busy. I was wrong - it took me almost 3 hours (a little over an hour aimlessly wandering while my ‘instant’ background check was being processed).
They had a ‘take a number’ dispenser to even talk to a salesman. And, they had duct tape lines all over the floor - I suppose for corralling people when they were really, really busy.
The only thing slowing down sales was lack of availability of certain models. At least a half dozen people came in looking for an AR-15. I’m sure (if they had them) that one store could sell several hundred in one day. And, of course, the shelves for ammo looked like a Russian bakery during a bread shortage.

Has a breakdown by state in 2012. It validates what you were thinking...for example California has fewer checks that Texas, so per capita, Texas is buying alot more guns. And Kentucky checks were double that of Texas!?!? New York and New Jersey (large population states) have a fraction of Texas’ totals. An odd one is Illinois (home of Chicago) - they almost matched Texas. Anyway, sales might be brisk in Texas, but slower in Blue enclaves.
And I don’t assume all those denials are felons. In my state (KS), if you move houses, you report the new address to the DMV...but they don’t issue you a new license.
So, your license doesn’t match your true home address for up to 6 years, when you get a new one. They say this is no big deal if you get pulled over - the cops have access to the database, and can figure it out.
However, I know at least one guy who got ‘denied’ because of this....so he went to the DMV and said he lost his license, so he could get a new (and correct) one.
I’m sure SNAFU’s like this cause alot of denials...I just doubt a felon is going to even bother, since he’s sure to get rejected.
I waited about 10 mins this weekend. Florida does some things right. Woulda been more but they’ve nearly sold out so the selection is limited.
Also Note: the Data did not mention how many of those turned down were prosecuted by the Obammy Dept of Injustice. The answer of course is ZERO.
The other number that disappoints me is that out of 2,495,400 background checks a large number of which were people buying their first gun the NRA reported only 500,000 new members in the last month. At any other time that would be a lot of new members but during these kind of times it is disappointing. Please encourage your friends to join if they haven’t already and be sure to remind your local gun dealers to try and take the time to let new gun buyers know about the benefits of being a member. If they are too busy ask if you can speak to their customers about membership benefits an hour here and there could make a huge differance. In Texas CHL’ers are not called in and I know of at least 4 guns purchased by those dastardly folks./s
I do not understand Kentucky... They show twice Texas year after year.
I got an email response from CCI today about my question about where all the 22 LR ammo was going.
They said they were in 24/7 operation on all ammo. They said they are producing and shipping 3 Million rounds of rim fire ammo a day and it is all being shipped.
I seemed to have made ‘ammo hunting’ part of my weekly routine.
I’ve gotten lucky showing up at odd times and walking away with what I needed. A couple of boxes (525 rds) of .22 here.....200 rds. of 9mm there...There seems to be plenty of .45, 10mm, some .38 sp and 12 gauge available.
Everyone here in central Texas has a limit on how much you can buy, regardless.
