NASHVILLE A bill letting Tennessees 375,000 handgun-carry permit holders store firearms in vehicles parked on most public and private lots sailed through the state Senate Judiciary Committee this afternoon despite objections voiced by businesses.
The measures next stop is the Senate floor.
Eight Judiciary Committee members, including Sen. Todd Gardenhire, R-Chattanooga, voted for the National Rifle Association-backed bill, sponsored by Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville. A lone Democrat, Sen. Ophelia Ford of Memphis, abstained.
Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Bill Ozier told lawmakers that large and smaller businesses continued to have concerns about the legislation, which failed last year, and what they consider government infringement on their private property rights.
We have heard from several employers who note that the outcome of this legislation may well impact their decision either to locate new facilities in this state or expand existing operations, Ozier told Judiciary Committee members. Its certainly more of a concern that you might otherwise think.
Volkswagen, which operates a plant in Chattanooga, was among large companies raising concerns about safety and the impact on the German companys property right when the bill came up last year.
Chattanooga is currently competing with Volkswagens plant in Mexico for the possible assembly of a new sport utility vehicle.

Wow. I believe we got this past two years ago in Florida. Notice all the dying that’s goin’ on ! /sarcasm
It is much more likely someone would be injured or killed by one of the cars in the lot that any firearm in said car.
There used to be some intense arguments here about this, with some saying that the owner of the lot had the right to ban guns inside of your car, on his factory parking lot.
It was a strange argument, since it not only controlled stuff in your car, like carrying a bible in the glove compartment or having a BLT sandwich in your car during work hours, but it also controlled you before and after work.
Well said-this is good news!! I know this decision will make the gun control nuts pucker but for those of us who carry, it will be a welcome thing.

I spent maybe 20 minutes shopping at a Publix supermarket in Central Florida when, upon checking out, asked the cashier, "Why is there a Deputy parked right outside the entrance"?
The answer, "Oh, a shopper got run over and killed there."

“The answer, “Oh, a shopper got run over and killed there.”
How many freepers, especially in Florida, notice how the design of the parking lots and access roads, FORCE drivers to pass the store entrances and not allow them to exit many lots farther away from the store fronts ?
Designed with the pedestrian at higher risk.
These are zoning and DOT matters. I am always more worried ‘bout hitting some with a cart.
