(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta delayed deployment of an aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East due to budget uncertainty on Wednesday, hours after warning that financial concerns were a threat to U.S. security.
The outgoing Pentagon chief delayed the deployment of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and the USS Gettysburg guided missile cruiser, which were due to leave Virginia later this week, because of uncertainty over the department's finances, Pentagon spokesman George Little said.
"Facing budget uncertainty ... the U.S. Navy made this request to the secretary and he approved," Little said in a statement. "This prudent decision enables the U.S. Navy to maintain these ships to deploy on short notice in the event they are needed to respond to national security contingencies."

These are scary times, folks. For the Navy especially: you know—the principal service responsible for our “pivot to the Pacific.” The Navy will reduce the number of shipd in operational use yet again this year. Worse, Navy will defer serious maintenance on ships and aircraft. All our services are in similar boats, so to speak.

Interesting that Fearless Leader has mismanaged our economy so damned brilliantly that we can’t maintain National Security.

Troubling. not because of the budget - we’ve got enough money to deploy the carrier - out of a $500B budget - this is an excuse and a show to get more money from taxpayers.
This tells me that the Pentagon brass is now willing to compromise their solemn duty to the American people in order to pretend that a carrier cant sail if you cut their budget 10%.
What wouldn’t they do, if they take their duty to defend America so lightly, and indeed, if they decide to openly declare hostilities against taxpayers who decide not to pay for any more government.
This is a very troubling milestone. Do we now have a merely “passive aggressive” military?

I do not believe that this is a matter of propulsion. Every one of our sailors has to eat. They need their clothes washed, and someone has to clean up the mess on the ship.

they have to eat and wash clothes whether at sea or tied up at a pier... i guess the biggest cost savings would be the escort ships that actually burn fuel

This report is just like the county executive complaining that if taxes aren't raised, he'll have no choice but to end ambulance service and police patrols. It's political baloney.
The Pentagon has a whopping budget. Do you really believe they have no choices about how it's spent?
