Chicago police no longer responding to all 911 calls

Chicago police are no longer responding in person to 911 calls reporting vehicle theft, garage burglary or simple assault in a change aimed at freeing up officers to deal with more serious crimes.

According to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times, the change came into effect on Sunday and also covers crime where the victim is "safe, secure and not in need of medical attention" and the offender is "not on the scene and not expected to return immediately."

Chicago authorities are hoping the change frees up more officers to attend to the most serious crimes, such as serious assaults and murders.

Instead of sending officers, 911 dispatchers have been told to transfer the calls to the Chicago Police Department’s Alternate Response Section, which is staffed by officers on light duty.

And yet phone bills still have the 911 fee without the service.

Amazing how that works, isn't it?

The whole church can handle prayer request. What a bad analogy. Amazing.

Chicago police scanners are online. It’s horrific to listen. Just to listen. It’s like each horror comes within seconds of the next. Just so sad.

The police have not responded to burglaries or thefts in our city for years now. They tell you to fill out a report online for insurance purposes. If insurance did not need the report the police probably wouldn’t even do a report.
Pathetic.

I wonder what the ratio of “good citizens” to criminals/criminal associated citizens is? Anyone know the demographics? When a populace has a majority of criminals and/or those with criminal associations there is NO HOPE of effective law enforcement. The majority of the populace doesn`t want it-and the police come from the local population(friends and relatives who are criminals). Chicago police have given up. They know it`s hopeless. The same thing is happening in New Orleans. Demographics favor criminals. You cant logically expect a predominately criminal population to want law enforcement.

Actually Bill Bratton did the same thing in New York in the 1990’s

By not sending cops out to every 911 call that involves minor crimes and disputes between individuals where there is no threat, you have cops available to patrol the high crime areas.

It should be a better use of scarce resources

In fact, the whole 911 idea messed up policing in the first place. Instead of patrolling an area and getting to know the people and having the people know the police, 911 removed the police form the community and put them in the position of only responding when called. Not very proactive.

And, 911 gives the citizen a sense of false security. Instead of working with the police to get the bad guys, citizens sit bak and expect the police to handle crime.

Crime reduction needs to involve the entire community. Part of reducing crime involves citizens deciding that they will not tolerate certain behaviors in their neighborhoods and supporting law enforcement in removing those who participate in those behaviors.
