It has to do with the assumptions that go along with being a Humanist.

Those who get elected, according to the humanist worldview, are the “best and brightest” and have the best benevolent intentions in mind for the country, and therefore need to be given as much power as possible to implement their superior vision for the country.

To lack “trust” or, more accurately, “faith”, in government and the people in it is a direct attack on their religion and worldview.
